Mindy Kaling doesn't understand self-deprecation - which is the main ingredient for any good comedic actor. She spends so much time trying to convince us that she's "every woman," that she never stops to realize we just aren't buying it. Her character dates and sleeps with a string of guys (who all confusingly want only her even though there are clearly hotter girls in the room), then whines through each episode that she can't find "Mr. Right," and we, the audience, are supposed to believe that that's true? Mindy should have allowed her character to have a hard time getting a date, for superficial reasons such as weight, race, beliefs, etc., which would have endeared us to her, carried a ring of truth, and made her alot funnier. 2. Apparently Mindy didn't learn from her time on The Office that, if you give the supporting cast rich personalities, it only enhances the main character and attacts more viewers to your show. The old "there's-someone/thing-for-everyone" principal. Mindy has surrounded herself with bland, one note players, to enhance her "stardom" and it fails miserably. Most likely because it's a testament that Mindy kaling cannot carry an entire show by herself. She's just not that interesting. Notice, Steve Carrell followed both of these guidelines on The Office. (The Office's Kelly Kapour was 10 times funnier, but also didn't have to carry an entire show on her own. Even so, I would much rather watch "The Kelly Kapour Show" over this). If you don't believe me, after you watch the season, go back and just watch the last 5 minutes or so of season 1. Mindy has just cut off all her hair into a dreadful Demi Moore cut, and is wearing glasses which gives her an adorable, nerdy, pixie look, and is feeling very self-conscious while sitting on the couch in the employee lounge with her co-worker - whom she's had a mini-crush on all season. She even has her feet tucked under her on the couch for extra effect. Their brief back and forth is very good and honest. It's like she's pulling out a new character that is way different than the character she stuffed down our throats all season. You'll say to yourself, "This is what the show should have been all season!" Unfortunately, it's the last scene of the season 1 finale. Anyone recommend season 2? Does it get any better?
