I squeeze out about an inch of the color base and the developer, mix it together and then apply for 5 minutes before washing out. I make sure to replace the caps quickly as exposure to oxygen starts the development process and the color base will turn black and reduce its effectiveness. This way I make a single tube last about 2 months or more. It does wash out slowly and of course my beard grows out as well, the 8 to 10 day application is the sweet spot for me.
