Great lens at a reduced price
I had been waiting for this lens to go on sale. When I saw this white box version for $389 I snapped it up. I had read comments from other people saying there was no warranty card with their white box lens but mine came with one. In fact, I registered the lens with Canon and had no problems. I have this 18-135 attached to my new Canon SL1 and have been using it for about a month. The lens has exceeded my expectations so far. There is plenty of zoom range for my needs. On vacation, we did a lot of water skiing and tubing. I was easily able to get good close-ups of skiers at the end of a 50' rope and capture great shots. The pictures were sharp and clear. The AF worked fast and accurately. The STM is silent and fast and the image stabilization is perfect. I haven't lost a shot because of camera shake and I hand held every shot. Many times in a moving ski boat that is being smacked around by waves and wind. I only shot a few minutes of video but the lens worked well. Colors were pure and saturated. The zoom ring on the 18-135 was easier to rotate was the kit 18-55. This produced less jerking motion when zooming. I also think the extra weight of the lens helped in this respect. Neither the 18-135 nor the 18-55 are great for video in this respect. The camera and lens are good for incidental video but I think a dedicated camcorder zoom is better. I shot a few night scenes including fireworks on the 4th of July. The AF and IS worked well and the lens was able to let in enough light to get decent night pics. The 18-135 is significantly heavier than the standard 18-55 lens but not so much that it can't be carried as a walk around lens if it's needed. It's just a little more uncomfortable and you have to pay more attention to where the camera is hanging and swinging about. Still, if I know I won't need the zoom, I would take the 18-55 since it is lighter. All in all, I am very happy with this lens for the price I paid.

Go to street shooting lens.
I researched this one before purchasing it. I use it to avoid having to constantly swap between my 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens. It's heavy, but not too heavy for my long walks. Using it with the small SL1 body compensates. I like it.

Buyer Beware with seller "Electronics Basket"
I ordered this lens twice. Both times I received a white box marked "Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS STM" BUT inside was a much cheaper EF-M 18-55 lens. Electronics Basket has positive reviews but obviously something is up. Interesting how there's never any L glass accidentally shipped in a white box! I eventually got the correct lens from Camera Wholesalers (through Amazon). Amazon refunded my money for the two bogus lens and expedited shipping for the second and third orders as we resolved the issue.

Superb Lens
Was eagerly waiting for the lens and was very happy to get hands on. But a dissappointment here is that the box does not have a warranty card. The details does mention about the warranty card though. But on shipping, there is no mention of the warranty card. I checked off 1 star for this itself. I guess this would be more of an issues with the vendor and not the lens. The lens overall is a very good and choice and would recommend to anybody looking for a good lens for both still and video.

Disappointed
Had it shipped 2nd day for a trip I was taking. I wanted a silent lens for videos with my T4i and this lens failed. Maybe I received a defect. It did not always focused properly during video and stills. It would not focus on distant objects in intelligent auto mode. The lens went crazy. It was able to focus on distant objects in any of the manual modes. The video quality is great when it's in focus and I can't comment on the stills because I had to used my USM lens instead. I'm returning it to Amazon and will spend the extra money at a retail store to be sure it works.

Should have bought this lens with my T4i in the first place!
DONT BE AFRAID! First, white box is a great way to save $, and the product for me was perfect! It is merely from a kit that was broken up and sold in its parts. Full warranty from Canon ! So, don't be afraid! Ok, the lens, Canon 18-135mm, to me is the lens I should have bought in the first place with my camera. The quality is fantastic, and by having the STM, really makes my T4i a T5i. That is really the only difference. I am just a picture taker and some video, not a pro, don't really even know what I am doing with my camera to tell the truth. But with the T4i and this lens, you got a all purpose lens that can zoom out , and can take great up close pics, and when you look at your pictures , you will be blown away! It is my go to everyday lens. You will love it to.

Beats the doors off my old Tamron 18-270 PZD
Just got this lens and compared it with my Tamron 18-270 PZD. Across the board, the Canon 18-135 STM is a terrific improvement! Still images are sharper with much more detail on the Canon. Colors are a bit more vibrant too. But when used as a video lens, the Canon just blows the doors off the Tamron! The Tamron's AF is noisy and slow, and zoom ring is rather "jerky". Additionally, the Tamron tends to mush out pretty quickly when panning. The Canon, on the other hand, is completely silent and has a very fast and responsive AF thanks to it's STM system. It stays much sharper and with greater color saturation during video as well. So, while the Tamron might have a longer tele range, I think the Canon gives a better, sharper image to work with, and in the end, that's what really matters!

Very nice lens and an upgrade from standard/kit Rebel EF-S lens. It feels substantial and quality made on your camera but, because of the larger optics diameter, it is heavy. Actually, it's same or even heavier than EF-S 55-250, which is not a small lens. So, take the "walk-around lens" opinions more as a matter of "with reference to what?". Picture quality is better than older EF-S lens, the AF is fast and silent, and it's good for most situations ... you won't feel the need to change lenses all the time. On older Rebel cameras (since this lens is newer model), you may not have the lens Peripheral Illumination Correction data included. You can use the Canon computer app and upload the correction data in your camera. It's very easy and the information how to do it is available online. Overall great quality lens, good value and sort of "universal". Con is the weight, but that's the trade-off for the better and larger optics.

I bought the Cannon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens as an upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my camera. Right away I noticed the lens was of higher quality than the kit lens. The STM motor focuses nearly silent and the zoom range allows me to compose the shots that I want to see. I use my camera mainly when hiking, the 18-135mm lens is great for shots of little furry creatures and wide mountain landscapes.

The lens seems to be well-made and more robust than the all-plastic construction of the 18 - 55 mm lens which came with my camera. Lots of versatility with it. I'm still not sure about its macro capabilities, but all else is good.

Failed in zoom very out of focus. AF did not work at all. Had to return lens. Very disappointed.

I own several lenses and none are as versatile for my photography as this 18 - 135. This is the lens which will now always be on the camera. It is what I expected and I am extremely pleased.
