A Great Little Vacuum Cleaner (For 10+ Years and Running)!
I purchased this little Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner over 10 years ago to replace the original metal-bodied Dirt Devil mini vacuum cleaner that my grandmother had given me. I am pretty sure that my grandmother's original Dirt Devil mini vacuum cleaner was around 30+ years old when it finally quit working (the motor went out). Yes, this "modern" mini Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner is made of plastic, very loud, and the hose attachment does not provide much suction. However, it has worked very well to clean up German Shepherd hair on furniture, and many dry spills, on a regular basis for the past 10 years. It's just too bad that Royal has discontinued this little beast of a vacuum cleaner. However, it is nearly impossible to find a corded mini vacuum cleaner from any manufacturer these days, as they have all gone cordless (battery powered) for "convenience." However, most cordless mini vacuum cleaners "suck," but not in a good way. This little Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner has a lot of suction (from the main head and not the hose), and the beater bar works well to lift many types of dirt. Also, the power cord is very long, so it can reach a great distance from any electrical outlet. I recently dismantled the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner and gave it a "tune-up" by changing the beater bar drive belt, cleaning out the head, removing the dog hair wound around the belt drive shaft, and changing the bag. It works like a brand new vacuum cleaner again. Just for reference, this Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner takes "type G" bags and "type 1" belts, which are still made by Royal and many aftermarket manufacturers. I see a lot of people bad-mouthing this little Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, for one reason or another, in many reviews. I realize that nothing is made like it used to be. However, in my case, this Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner has been a great investment for the past 10 years, and hopefully many more years to come, as I really don't want to resort to replacing it with one of those cheap cordless mini vacuum cleaners on the market these days. If this Dirt Devil mini vacuum cleaner can still be found anywhere, I highly recommend picking one up. Hopefully, it will last 10+ years like the one that I still have.

Dirt Devil stopped making this vacuum, which is the best of all the stair vacuums!
I am so happy to get this stair vacuum. It is the Very Best of all of the stair vacuums. It has a rotary bar and very good suction. It is light weight and works great!

Broke after one use. Not a good choice.
We have a mouse problem in our house. It's a house that's very, um, country, very much part of its wooded environment. There are crevices between its stones, ivy growing unchecked on its old walls, and thick bushes pushing against its base. Which all makes for a charming picture--and a neon welcome sign to mice. I've been waging a no-kill battle against the cute little critters for years, and there's unavoidable debris in the wake of their departure. Yes. Droppings. I purchased this handheld vacuum expressly for the purpose of disposing of those unsanitary drops and of the bits of nest-building material scattered in the attic and other dark places. This Dirt Devil seemed perfect: inexpensive, powerful enough, equipped with a hose, and it uses bags. Bags! No need to come into contact with the stuff. Just pop out the bag and toss it in the garbage. Replace and repeat. I used the vacuum once for this purpose, and it worked like a charm--sucked up everything, and the loud noise was unremarkable (it's a motorized appliance after all). I threw out the bag (one bag is included with the machine) and immediately ordered a 10-pack of replacement bags and a couple of replacement belts. (A lot of reviewers warn that the belt tends to break, and I wanted to be prepared.) Today I took out the trusty Dirt Devil to suck up some more nastiness, inserted a new bag, flipped forward the roller lid to engage the hose suction, flipped the On switch, and ... nothing. No suction, no reassuring loud motor noise, just a quiet ineffective hum. I jumped the gun on this one with my enthusiasm, it seems. One use, and it won't suck up anything. It's a dud, replacement bags and belts a waste. After I sterilize the vacuum with disinfecting wipes, back it goes. I'll spend more money to get a more reliable machine. Until then, it's back to the dustpan method.

Just like the old days...
As a child in the early 90s, my parents had a handheld Dirt Devil similar to this one (the original old-school version without the side hose), and we used it to vacuum the interior carpeted stairs, as nothing else would get the job done. Now that I'm nearly 30 and have a house with carpeted stairs of my own -- not to mention three cats that tend to shed a lot -- I decided to pick one of these up to see if it worked as well as I remember the old one did twenty years ago. It does. Yes, it's very loud, as many reviewers have said here. Yes, it works, very well. The addition of the hose was a great idea as well; it allows you to get into cracks and crevices that you normally wouldn't be able to reach. Suction isn't a problem, though the force and speed of the spinning brush will occasionally kick back some dirt and other particles if held at a certain angle. Replacement belts and bags are plentiful and very affordable. My only true gripe is that I wish they would've made this newer, redesigned version with a removable, dumpable canister to eliminate the need for bags. So yeah, if you're looking for the successor to the original handheld Dirt Devil, this is it, look no further. If you just need a basic hand vacuum, this is a good buy as well. I will also say I own a Dirt Devil Versa stick-vac, and it's very nice (as well as incredibly super cheap; got mine for about $10 at Target). I've never had any problems with a Dirt Devil product.

For an inexpesive hand vac this is my go-to. A high powered, handy stair vac that attacks the clumps of hair from my two massive Ragdoll cats with ease. The brush roller gets every last fine hair, grain of sand or dust on my 26 high-traffic carpeted stairs! The “flip” system allows you to access a crevice tool- far less efficient than the brush roller, but very handy to have on board nonetheless. The only downfall is that you need to purchase vacuum bags (size G) which are kind of expensive for what they are. If you don’t use the bags, the dust will just end up shooting out from the cloth bag- pretty much defeating the purpose. It’s corded, something I specifically looked for— i won’t get the power I need in a rechargeable. It’s 16 foot length is perfect to reach my staircases without switching wall outlets. This is a specialty item for sure, don’t think it can replace your home vacuum. It’s great for upholstery, carpeted stairs or messes like a flower pot soil-spill. One word of advice, if you don’t like noise, this isn’t for you. On high power this vacuum is LOUD, but to be expected in a small, high powered motor.

Perfect little vacuum for cars and trucks. I have a husky mix dog that sheds its hair in the summer like the trees in autumn loses their leaves. The back seat of my pickup was like it was growing hair. This little gem help pick up 90% of the hairs. A sticky roller helped with rest. Draw back, it does have a disposable bag which I did not know when I ordered it but I found some bags for it on Amazon for a reasonable price. I ordered some spare bags and two spare belts so I’m set for a long time. I noticed after they have the same unit bagless for about $25 more but I noticed from the picture it has an air filter that would eventually have to be changed so I’m happy with the one I have.
