I bought this to replace a piller that I had purchased from our old vet's office, before we moved. Eventually it wore out, though. Looking for a new piller, I thought this one might actually be better than our old one because of the small opening. The plunger had sticky yellowish goo on it (probably from the manufacturing process), and the rubbery tip had excess material hanging off it. Nevertheless, I washed the whole thing and gave it a try. As of this writing, this product has worked on 0/4 attempts. The tiny pill half barely fits in the opening, and the plunger sticks so much when I try to give the pill that it makes a loud POP when I finally push it through. Even worse, though, is that the pill doesn't "shoot" out. It just sort of sticks to the rubbery tip and slowly falls off. I tried it once with the pill pocket trick, but then it was even worse. This product is awful. This is used entirely with one hand (I use my dominant hand for precision placement of the pill); your other hand will be holding your pet's head. Once the plunger is pulled out and the pill is inserted into the tip, hold the shaft with your second and third fingers between the two disks you see on the shaft. Those are for making sure the shaft doesn't slide along your hand while you depress the plunger. Use your thumb to depress the plunger. It takes a lot of practice to get good at this, so don't let initial trouble discourage you. Always remember to be kind and gentle to your pet and they will eventually learn that you aren't going to frighten or hurt them. There will always be exceptions: I've pilled many cats over the years and not all of them take well to this method. One trick I learned is to use empty gel capsules. This is especially helpful when you've got a split pill which may taste bitter, stick to your cat's throat, and cause excessive drooling. That's a nasty experience for them and they don't look forward to it. Capsuline brand gel caps (available here on Amazon) are indispensable for filling with split pills and using this piller to administer the proper dosage to your pet. They never taste the medication and it goes down their throats smoothly. Has saved my fingers from getting bit which is the purpose. I was worried after reading some of the reviews. It is pretty flimsy but there is no need to be rough with it, it is easy to load & "pop" the pill into the cats throat.
