Don't attach it to your knife
All the knifes I had in my life have had a compass in them, so I bought the ultimate pro fixed blade and took out the whistle and put the compass there. Is a little bigger that I thought but a cool upgrade. BUT, I realized that the compass wasn't pointing the north. I was about to write a review about the little piece of crap I just bought, but the compass was ok. The blade have steel in all the knife, all this steel was attracting the compass north. So ok, I tried to put other compasses close to that knife and got the same result, so is not the compass fault. This is just an advice for anyone that want to do the same.So why the compass works in other knifes? That's because these ones only have steel in the blade, there is enough distance between the steel and the compass. To be fair, is a really good compass, it just have a little bubble that annoy me and the little orange part don't seems to be tight. And be carefull with the size, cause the description don't give any reference. The compass itself is 1 inch diameter (the black circle), hope this could be useful to someone.

Magnet inside packaging makes it appear as if it arrives broken!
I ordered this as a gift for my boyfriend. We noticed before we even removed it from the package that not matter what direction we pointed it in, it always read North. He decided to open it anyways and we found out that there is one of those magnetic theft detectors inside the packaging that actually holds the polarity of the compass. Once we got the compass away from this, it worked perfectly! We held it over the magnet again and it immediately locked back up and again only read North. Other than this, we have had no issues with it! It's small enough that we can put it on our backpack and it won't weigh it down or get in the way, and we only need it in case of an emergency (or if we're just curious as to what direction we are walking in). If you're looking for something small for occasional use, I would recommend this product. So if you decide to order this product and it arrives stuck pointing in one direction, chances are it's NOT broken!

Small, nice, handy
This is a great little device that I keep firmly attached to my keycain. It works well and is nice because it doesn't take up much room. However, the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is an air bubble trapped inside the compass. Normally this isn't a big deal, except it will get under the disk that is the compass. When it does, it can sometimes require quite a bit of work to shake it out from under the disk.In my mind, this is a design flaw and there should be no air bubble in there. But since it is there, there should be a better method on the disk for allowing it to pass back and forth around the disk.

Agreed, great compact compass.
The compass is a little bigger than the Compact Torch light that it was based off of. Though it feels good in your hand and is quite accurate. It lashes onto the sternum strap of my Dakine Heli Pack 11L off to the left side perfectly. It hangs there about the same height as the zipper for the hydration sleeve. Looks good mounted on the pack too!A good buy for anyone looking to just have a compass on them while in the backcountry.

A compass
There's not too many exciting things you can say about a compass, although it is compact and it works well. Anyone who likes to go off into the wilderness should always have a product like this. Unless they know all the old tricks about knowing which way is north and has a good sense of direction.

... a solid product in my experience and I do like their Bear Grylls line
Gerber has always made a solid product in my experience and I do like their Bear Grylls line. In fact I have a few pieces in my collection. This compass is good but not great. It's well constructed and works fine but I feel it's way over priced. In truth it's only worth about half of what you pay for it.

Nice size for wearing on jacket
Thought it would be good to have when I walk through the woods. Sometimes I get turned around and a small compass would help me keep my bearings. The one I was delivered didn't even know North in my house. Maybe I was getting a false read due to the electronic equipment in the room, but I sent it back. I hope I just got a defective one. But wasn't interested in trying another. The return went smoothly. The compass would have been a nice size to hook on the zipper of my vest.

These (like all BG products) are cheap crap.
I really wanted to like these. I ordered two, one to put on each of our gear bags. First, the photo is deceiving, they are BIG. The compass dial itself is 1" in diameter. This isn't something that can really be added to a zipper or something like that. Of the two I purchased, one has a bubble in it, that doesn't allow the dial to spin freely or float horizontally like a compass dial should.

Works fine. although a bit overpriced for what it is
Works fine. although a bit overpriced for what it is. Make sure you take it out of the packaging before testing it as there is an anti-theft device in the packaging that makes the compass not work at all while it is in the packaging (it basically aligns the compass north with the anti-theft strip and makes it point downwards. . I almost returned mine as not working before I realised this.

Not well made
Good compass but not well made as it broke shortly after purchasing it.

Had better out of a xmas cracker!
Dial has split in half, haven't even taken it iut of the house yet. Not a good reflection on quality of Gerber products given the price!! Always suspected this kit was cheaply made and over priced using bear grylls name to justify price when he doesn't even use the kit (or rarely does) kinda puts me off bear grylls for endorsing this stuff. Money eh!!?
