T-Fal sells a similar set in terms of pieces and dimensions for about $100. What does the additional $400 buy me?

A lifetime guarantee. This All-Clad set would hold up in a restaurant kitchen. I have been totally satisfied with how evenly the pans heat and how easily they clean up. Also the lids are stainless steel too. It's ok to cook with them in the oven if the recipe calls for it.

All the pans are, but the lids are not and neither are the bowls.

What is the difference between this set and the $699 set that amazon offers?

The biggest difference -- perhaps the **only** difference -- is that the exterior of the $499 set has a matte, brushed aluminum finish (as opposed to the shiny, stainless steel finish of the more expensive set).I bought the less-expensive set, and the brushed-aluminum exterior finish on my set scratched easily and immediately.It was absolutely heartbreaking; it was such lovely cookware for the first 15 seconds out of the box!BUT!!! that said, their performance is every bit as good as the more expensive set. So, if you can live with a less-than-pristine exterior appearance, then you can have a super-high quality product at a good price!Hope this helps.
