Fantastic Voyage ( Strange Journey ) [DVD]

I'm not a doctor and biology wasn't my strongest subject at school but for a sci fi film from the 60s about shrinking a submarine and injecting it into a human body so it can perform medical operations from the inside this film actually seemed like a sensible and realistic expression of a completely unrealistic concept. The acting is strong, the effects look good and hold up pretty well.What strikes me the most is that as a film viewer watching in 2015 after seeing Interstellar and Moon and other recent 'now or near future' sci fi films with their huge budgets and top quality CGI effects, I found myself getting sucked into this film and NOT laughing at the sets or the practical effects or the overly obvious green screen. The film has a long surviving quality about it that I hope continues to last because despite the moments of cheesiness and points in the plot where the characters survive because they just get lucky, this is a fun film and as far as I'm concern a classic of sci fi.

EXCELLENT! One of best SF/adventure films ever and a real monument of cinema! I always LOVED this 1966 film and recently I was happy to confirm, that it didn't age AT ALL and is still a great watch! Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.Cold War. United States and the Soviet Union are both intensely working on technology of miniaturization of matter by shrinking individual atoms. Czech scientist Jan Benes, working under duress for the Soviets, made a great breakthrough, but doesn't want Moscow to have this technology. With the help of the CIA, he escaped to the West, but an attempted assassination leaves him comatose with a nearly impossible to remove blood clot in his brain.The only way to save his life is to operate from INSIDE his skull. It is decided to use the experimental miniaturization technology to reduce a small submersible, the "Proteus" as well as its crew, and introduce it into Benes body. The crew must then bring "Proteus" into Benes brain, remove the clot and evacuate before the miniaturization ends - indeed, at that time it is possible to miniaturize things and people just for 60 minutes...An ad hoc team is assembled for this mission: Captain Bill Owens (William Redfield) - pilot; Dr. Michaels (Donald Pleasence) - mission medical commander; Dr. Peter Duval (Arthur Kennedy) - brain surgeon; Cora Peterson (Raquel Welch) - assistant to the brain surgeon. Last but not least there is also CIA agent Charles Grant (Stephen Boyd), who is there - well, initially, we don't know why, but it will quickly turn out it was a good idea to place him on board... All that takes care of about ten first minutes of the film - and then the fantastic voyage begins and I will say nothing more...This is an almost perfect SF/adventure film, one of the best ever made! The vision of inside of human body as an alien, unknown universe is glorious and even today, after almost 50 years, makes a certain impression. For its technical aspect this film got two Oscars (Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects) and there is no question that they were TOTALLY DESERVED! The all shattering power of human heart, lungs hurricanes, earquakes (yes, you read well, it is NOT a typo) as well as merciless wars of extermination waged in this innerspace - all of this still connects with the viewer BIG TIME. And then there is of course the fact that human beings, once removed from their comfort zone, find quite quickly that all masters of creation that they may be, for some... well, things... they are just a new and welcome source of yummy proteins...))) As all not yet fully explored and mapped territories, the inside of human body also has "HERE BE DRAGONS" warning written on some more remote corners...Even if in principle Stephen Boyd, whose character is the muscle, security and counter-intelligence guy, was supposed to be the main star of the film, he is frequently outstaged by actors playing other members of the crew, especially one of greatest Hollywood workaholics extraordinaires, Donald Pleasance (the other one was Ernest Borgnine). Raquel Welch shapes are also used to the greatest possible extent (she keeps putting and taking off her diving suit).The scenario is strong, characters act mostly rationally, there are some twists (some of them really surprising and cruel) and as the clock is ticking, there is a real suspense in this film. The crew of "Proteus" faces many great dangers and must use some fast thinking to survive and accomplish their mission and it is not so easy to immediately find some plot holes. This scenario should be studied by present day Hollywood writers - they could learn A LOT from it...Another thing you must know before watching this film - THERE WILL BE BLOOD! In fact even more, this is LITERALLY the most drenched in haemoglobin movie EVER! OK, I stop here. Sorry for that, I couldn't resist...)))Once again, this is a VERY GOOD SF/adventure film, old but NOT AGED one little bit! I tried once to imagine how a modern remake would look - and I shivered in terror... Thanks God nobody ever dared to take another shot at this masterpiece - and let it stay that way. BUY IT, SEE IT, KEEP IT and never let it go. ENJOY!

The film tells the tale of a team of specialists being shrunk to microscopicsize on board a submarine 'Proteus' which is injected into a ''key'' scientistsbloodstream to identify his medical condition in the hope of saving his life.The team encounter several difficulties along the way including a traitor onboard.The journey has to be completed within 'one hour' after which the mini beingswould begin to enlarge.Recently I reviewed a 70's film and was very critical of the picture quality,believing that if the distributors release older films such as this onto the'Blu-ray' format a reasonable upgrade is the very least that should be offered.This film tends to prove the point I was making when reviewing 'The Fury' ...'The Fantastic Voyage' has been upgraded to a standard that I would describe asacceptable........which leaves me with a simple task....recommending the viewingof this family-friendly movie from yesteryearOverall--acceptable picture and sound quality.The disc also has several additional features on board for those interested,including....* Lava Lamps and celluloid: a tribute to the visual effects of the film.* Commentary by film and music historian 'Jeff Bond'* Whirlpool scene: storyboard to scene.* Trailer & TV spots.* Commentary by film and music historian 'Jeff Bond'* Isolated score track with commentary by film and music historians 'Jeff Bond''John Burligame' - and 'Nick Redman'The special effects during the film were in 1966 pretty impressive at that time,today of course we have, the ever improving computer enhancements.The film also has an impressive cast list which includes...'Stephen Boyd' 'EdmondO'brien' 'Arthur Kennedy' 'Donald Pleasence' and 'Raquel Welch'* Worth revisiting on the 'HD' format.

Ein U-Boot samt Besatzung ("Ich hab gedacht, ich hätte Ferien.") soll auf Mikrobengröße GESCHRUMPFT und in Beneš Blutbahn gespritzt werden, um das lebensbedrohliche Blutgerinnsel zu entfernen ("Wir können an den Thrombus nur vom Innern des Kopfes herankommen. Und daher haben wir beschlossen, ein chirurgisches Team mit Ihnen in ein Unterseeboot zu stecken, es zu verkleinern und in eine Arterie zu injizieren!"). Für die fünfköpfige Crew beginnt ein phantastisches Abenteuer – und ein dramatischer Wettlauf gegen die Zeit, denn in genau einer Stunde MÜSSEN sie ihre Mission erfüllt haben ("Die Zeit ist begrenzt, denn diese mikroskopische Größe hält sich nicht länger als sechzig Minuten!"). Mit einem natürlich geheimen unterirdischen Labor ("Was heißt CMDF? Ist das vielleicht die Abkürzung für Club der missverstandenen Damenfreunde?"), ein bisschen Biologie ("Ich habe noch nie etwas von einem lymphatischen System gehört." - "Das lymphatische System zieht überschüssige Flüssigkeit aus den Geweben heraus. Sonst würde der Mensch platzen wie ein Luftballon!") und ganz viel Poesie ("Und all die hellen Sonnen, die das riesige Universum bescheinen, sind trüb, verglichen mit dem Feuer eines einzigen menschlichen Gedankens!"). Die phantastische Reise mag heute veraltet wirken, ohne deshalb seinen Unterhaltungswert oder seine Ansehnlichkeit eingebüßt zu haben. Filme, denen dies gelingt, nennt man gern Klassiker, ein inflationär eingesetzter Titel, der diesem Streifen indes definitiv gebührt. Für mich 4/5**** und Note 2+"Wir sind doch vorhin durch ein Zeug gefahren, das wie Seetang aussah." - "Retikuläre Fasern." - "Es hat die Ansaugrohre verstopft, wir haben keinen Antrieb mehr!"Die phantastische Reise wurde 1967 mit zwei Oscars für das BESTE SZENENBILD und die BESTEN VISUELLEN EFFEKTE (Art Cruickshank, 1919-1983, Planet der Affen, Tron, Oscar-Nominierung 1980 für Das schwarze Loch) ausgezeichnet und für zwei weitere nominiert: den BESTEN SCHNITT (William B. Murphy, 1908-1970) und die BESTE KAMERA (Ernest Laszlo, siehe oben).Allerdings wirft der Film auch Fragen auf (vor allem das Ende). Drum sah sich Science-Fiction-Legende Isaac ASIMOV persönlich (1920-1992, I, Robot 1950) genötigt, noch im selben Jahr eine "bessere" (realistischere) phantastische Reise zu schreiben ("Als der Film zu Ende war, drehte sich meine Tochter zu mir und sagte: "Müsste [kann aus Spoilergründen nicht wiedergegeben werden] ...?" - "Gewiss, aber das hast du nur erkannt, weil du schlauer bist als der durchschnittliche Hollywood-Produzent. Immerhin bist du ja schon elf!"), die bis heute als wertvolle ERGÄNZUNG zum Film gilt (Die phantastische Reise/ Fantastic Voyage, 1966). Über die Kompromisse, die er bei der Niederschrift eingehen musste, ärgerte sich Asimov so sehr, dass er sie zwanzig Jahre später noch einmal (und dieses Mal ganz in seinem Sinne) schrieb (Doktor Schapirows Gehirn/ Fantastic Voyage II: Destination Brain, 1987).Die Idee, ein geschrumpftes U-Boot durch einen menschlichen Körper wandern zu lassen, wird übrigens auch (weniger spannend, dafür aber auf köstliche und höchst vergnügliche Art und Weise) in DIE REISE INS ICH (1987, Originaltitel: INNERSPACE, mit Dennis Quaid, Martin Short und Meg Ryan, Regie: Joe Dante) umgesetzt (Kameramann dort ist übrigens der Sohn von unserem Kameramann hier ;-)."Wir müssen den Laser reparieren! I'm confining my remarks mostly to the quality of the Blu-ray transfer, as I assume that anyone buying a 50-year-old science fiction film knows already that it was a good movie. It's still a good movie.The picture transfer is terrific. It's sharp and the colors are rich. Yes, it's a bit grainy. But I don't think it's obtrusive for the most part. Yes, in the matte shots you can see excessive grain and matte lines. There's really no way around this problem when it comes to optical printing--which was how they did these effects before cheap computers came along. There's really only one shot where it's what I would call bad--a low angle of the Proteus's pilot, up in his bubble cockpit, doing his thing. One side of his face is missing.The other effect that has not fared too well is the "swimming" as the characters leave the submarine on dives to make various repairs. Unfortunately, it was all done with wire work, the characters suspended on wires and waving their arms around to make it look as if they're swimming. It just doesn't work all that well. It never has. They look like actors on wires waving their arms around and, occasionally, scissoring their legs. It would've looked a lot better if they could've shot them underwater in a tank but. . . I guess it was too hard to do that and still get those convincing-looking intravenous backgrounds.Speaking of which, the various fabric depictions of the tissues inside the human body, the flashes of light that could be thoughts inside the human brain, the red corpuscles, the antibodies are all rendered with such imagination. They're quite convincing. And those menacing white corpuscles--well, they're pretty scary. Especially when they eat Donald Pleasance.The sub itself also looks great, inside and out. The lab sets, likewise, hold up extremely well.The soundtrack is every bit as good as the video transfer. It's a 5.1 DTS soundtrack and--like most of these things taken from a mono source--it's confined almost entirely to the front speakers. But it's rich and has a fantastic tonal range. All the highs and lows of a modern soundtrack are there. Plenty of bass, clear dialogue, and the full orchestral score really comes through.There are some pretty good extras. I say pretty good, not great. I eagerly watched the Lava lamps and corpuscles featurette, which promised to explain how they pulled off some of the special effects. Unfortunately, there's not much of that. Mostly it's a couple of modern-day special effects guys gushing about how difficult it was to do a lot of this stuff back then, full of admiration for the technicians. And that's fine, but I would have liked a little more nuts-and-bolts explaining of just HOW they pulled it off.That's a pretty minor quibble. The diskt looks and sounds great, and the story and performances hold up well. If you loved this film, there's really no reason not to love this Blu-ray version.

Remasterisé à merveille, ce film que j'ai vu dans les années 66-67 me rappelle mes années d'étudiants où nous avions eu une représentation pour toute mon école. La clarté des images est plus que bonne. A avoir dans sa collection de DVD. Je possédais déja le DVD mais le Blu-ray est de qualité supérieur.

Intanto diciamo subito che il blu-ray (il titolo italiano del film è Viaggio Allucinante) dispone anche di lingua italiana (DTS 1.0 mono) e sottotitoli in italiano, anche se nella descrizione del BD tale informazione non è riportata. Venendo alla descrizione della parte video direi che è stato fatto un ottimo lavoro. L'immagine è nitida, i colori sono stati resi più brillanti (e il film si presta molto a questo...) e l'alta definizione si percepisce bene soprattutto nei primi piani. Non si ha sgranamento neppure nelle scene più scure e questo è segno del valido restyling effettuato digitalmente sulla pellicola. Altrettanto purtroppo non si può dire per l'audio: modesto, veramente modesto, ma se non altro sono state mantenute le voci dei doppiatori originali, il che fa anche piacere. Certo che commutare sulla traccia in lingua originale inglese fa saltare sulla poltrona! Anche nel 1966 era possibile registrare con un audio per noi impensabile. Nel BD ci sono anche dei contenuti extra che però sono solo in lingua originale, senza neppure i sottotitoli in italiano. Non mi soffermo sulla trama del film poichè gli appassionati lo conosceranno a memoria e tutti gli altri...beh, farebbero bene a vederlo. È un'opera di fantascienza molto ben fatta, con suggestivi effetti speciali per l'epoca. Un ottimo blu-ray. Spedizione Amazon dalla Francia, ma ugualmente perfetta.

A TEAN DISCOVERS THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE A MAN IS TO SHINK THEMSELVES AND A SUBMARINE LIKE THING AND JOURNEY INTO THE MANS BODY...GREAT CAST HEADED BY RAQUEL WELCH AND THE VERY HANDSOME STEPHEN BOYD......COLOURFUL...GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY AND SPECIAL EFFECTS...ONE OF RAQUEL WELCH`S EARLY ROLES..

Es hat alles bestens geklappt.Lieferung ist angekommen. Die DVD in sehr gutem Zustand. Wie gerade ausgepackt. Keinerlei Gebrauchsspuren an Hülle oder Disc.Der Film selbst hat sehr gute Bildqualität. Mehr kann man sich von einen Film aus 1966 nicht wünschen. Besser geht’s nicht.Ich habe endlich wieder einen meiner Lieblingsfilme bei mir. Kindheitserinnerungen wurden wieder wach. Und nichts hat der Film von seiner Faszination verloren.Wird es jemals ein Remake zu diesem Film geben, wird es sich am Original erst messen müssen. Kein modernes Schnickschnack, wie in vielen heutigen Filmen. Der Film versprüht auch heute noch jene Faszination, die ich damals spürte. Und man merkt wie der Film diese Faszination lebt.

Dem Film liegt eine phantastische Idee zu Grunde, die im Blockbuster Film "Die Reise ins Ich" (1987) mit Dennis Quaid wieder entdeckt wurde. Aber dieser Film wurde fast 20 Jahre vorher gedreht und hat mit Stephen Boyd (Ben Hur), Raquel Welch und Donald Pleasence eine hervorragende Besetzung. Die Geschichte ist nicht kompliziert und verschluneg, dennoch spannend und unterhaltend.Auch wenn manche Tricks aus heutiger Sicht etwas holprig wirken, ist es doch erstaunlich mit welchen Mitteln vor fast 50 Jahren solche Filme gedreht wurden und bis heute wirken. Manchem heutigen Hollywood-Streifen würde es vermutlich gut tun sich manchmal auf solch einfache Mittel zu besinnen und die eine oder andere Computeranimation durch fantasievolle Filmbauten zu ersetzen.

Dieser Film aus dem Jahre 1966 ist ein kleines Juwel; ein interessanter und intelligenter Science-Fiction-Film mit Starbesetzung und einer tollen Story.Um das Leben eines VIPs zu retten, in dessen Gehirn sich ein tödliches Blutgerinnsel gebildet hat, wird ein Mini-U-Boot samt Crew mittels eines sensationellen Verfahrens dermaßen verkleinert, so dass es per Injektion in die Blutbahn des Patienten gespritzt werden kann.Die "phantastische Reise" muss jedoch schnell vonstatten gehen, etwa eine ganze Stunde bleibt dem Team, um den wohl für die Regierung mehr als wichtigen Wissenschaftler zu retten.Dies scheinen nicht nur die Antikörper im Blut des Patienten verhindern zu wollen. Nein, auch an Bord der Crew gibt es wohl jemanden, der die um jeden Preis verhindern will.Dem Zuschauer erwartet eine spannende Odyssee und ein einzigartiges Filmerlebnis, mit (für damals) tollen und visionären Effekten.Wie gesagt hochkarätige Stars, wie Donald Pleasence ("Halloween"), Stephen Boyd ("Ben Hur") oder Raquel Welch ("Die drei Musketiere") machen dieses Thriller zu einem wahren Vergnügen. Ein Film, der aus dem Genre des Science-Fiction wohl kaum wegdenkbar ist.Die Qualität der DVD ist recht gut, mehr als den Original Kino-Trailer hat diese jedoch nicht zu bieten, ein kleines Manko also. Aber was solls, der Film zählt und der ist super.Anmerken möchte ich noch, dass es zu diesem Film ein "Remake" gibt ("Die Reise ins Ich" aus dem Jahre 1987), die dem Original jedoch meiner Meinung nach in keinster Weise das Wasser reichen kann.

Blu-ray d'azione di ottima qualità complessiva sia video che audio. Ottimo il comparto dei contenuti speciali. Sicuramente un pezzo di storia del cinema. Regalo a persona estremamente cara.

The BluRay DVD on my 55 inch widescreen monitor can still do the same thing today.Sure, by today's standards it looks dated. But, when viewed through the lens of over fifty years it remains the Pre-emanate trip through the human body. Also, the added tension of the sixty minute time limit to get in, perform the operation and get out makes this an enduring edge of the seat thrill ride It would be two more years before Stanley Kubrick would copulate our psyches with ‘2001: a space odyssey’ and take us on the Ultimate Trip.Fantastic Voyage in all its Widescreen and Technicolor Glory still has the power to Captivate the viewer for a Hazardous Hair Raising Trip through Innerspace!!!

Schon die Idee, ein U-Boot auf Mikrobengröße zu schrumpfen und in den menschlichen Körper zu injizieren, ist interessant. Bedenkt man dann das Produktionsjahr, kann die Technik und der Aufwand, mit denen dieser Film gedreht wurde, nur begeistern. Klar, dass die Story in Kombination mit heutiger Computerfilmtechnik ein weitaus größerer Hit wäre (siehe: ŽDie Reise ins IchŽ), aber als Käufer dieses Films sollte man sich im Klaren sein, dass damalige Technik mit der heutigen nicht zu vergleichen ist. Dennoch ist der cinematische Aufwand dieses Streifens beachtenswert, die Tricktechnik für diese Zeit ausgereift und beachtlich!Interessant ist auch, dass die Kulisse aus ŽDie phantastische ReiseŽ bei einer medizinischen Fachmesse ausgestellt wurde und große Bewunderung geerntet hat. Dass amerikanische Ärzte die Produktion aktiv unterstützt haben, fällt auch dem auf, der einen medizinischen Beruf ausübt (so wie ich).Nicht nur für Science Fiction Fans, sondern für jeden Anhänger alter Filme ist dieser Film ein MUSS!

Still fantastic escapism with very good performances from several stars of the past, particularly Arthur Kennedy and Donald Pleasance. And Raquel Welch looks almost better in a wet suit than a fur bikini. Effects remain first rate considering the technology of the day.
