Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Vol. 3 (Book & CDs)

Easy at beginning gets gradually more difference

These etudes are a lot of fun to play. They're really nice jazz solos, with great melody lines and more than a little swing. The same part can be played on either alto or tenor, as two different backing track CDs are provided-- the backing band transposes so you don't have to. As an amateur player (recreational clarinetist in high school/college years, years ago) and relative sax newbie, I find them challenging. But the tempos are moderate, and they are accessible to anyone who is comfortable with basic sax technique and jazz rhythms, and help develop tone and improve fluidity in the fingering.

This volume is awesome. The songs sound great. I think playing Jazz Etudes is a great way of learning Jazz vocabulary. The net effect is similar to playing solo transcriptions. The advantage of using Greg's Etudes is that the recordings are really nice and readily available, and the material is not too difficult. I also have Volume 2 of the same series, but Volume 2 is much more difficult (much faster) than volume three. This one is probably Greg's best Étude collection to start after playing through his books jazz Phrasing for Saxophone.

The person I purchased from on Amazon was supposed to send me a new item but it was opened and you could tell it was either used or copied and then put back in the package. The worst part is that I was charged for a new item. I won't buy anything like this again from Amazon and I'll tell others not to buy these items either.

I say this is an excellent purchase being a person who is searching for good quality items for use and use when I really really am in need

plenty more here but on a more basic level.. book one is still my fave and this one is great for my students..

Nothing wrong with the book but it was delivered without the CD that it was supposed to come with. Will have to buy again because the CD is important for my kid's class.

I think these jazz etudes and jazz phrasing books are terrific, I highly recommend all of them. Essentially each tune or etude puts a new melody line to a commonly played tune or jazz standard.With these pieces, Greg has these beautiful melodies that reinforce good habits as far as rhythm, articulation, melody. Playing in unison with the demo track or you can play the line and/or improvise along with the backing track.Volume 3 is really nice for intermediate level players the tempos are a little more moderate than the first two volumes. The quality of writing is excellent, these books are terrific and very practical to work with.

This is a great book of Etudes for intermediate players. I would recommend it to aspiring players like myself who struggle with some of the very fast studies in other books such as Vol 1.
