What to Eat During Cancer Treatment

First, the review titled "Outdated inappropriate ingredients" is a bit deceptive. If you are going through chemo, you are likely dealing with a variety of issues including needing excess calories to make up for days when you are too nauseated to eat. The book points out in the educational section at the front, that some of the recipes are designed to provide more calories than what you might otherwise want in a normal meal for exactly this reason. The book also addresses and provides recipes for all of the normal chemo side effects. If you are new to chemo or a caregiver for someone with chemo, there are a lot of weird side effects to deal with. This book does a wonderful job talking the reader through everything they need to know from these side effects to the additional steps that need to be taken for proper food safety when cooking for someone whose immune system is suppressed by chemo. In short - This book is laid out in a way that is ideal for someone going through chemo. The recipes are targeted for optimal nutrition and management of side effects. There is also a valuable amount of needed food related information to help you throughout your chemo regiment. IMHO, It's definitely worth the purchase.

The recipes are arranged for different side effects..super easy to use. Also, they are tasty and simple to prepare.

I am really excited about this cookbook! I’ve been an oncology dietitian for 10 years and had used the old American Cancer Society cookbook. This updated one was written by an oncology dietitian who literally wrote the handbook for oncology nutrition! It was an added section for “trouble swallowing” that the old one didn’t have as well as lots of updated recipes. I love that it includes a recipe for “golden milk”! I got money to purchase five for patients and am loving them! Great update ACS.

Never used the recipes as when you are I'll you can't expect your caregiver to try and find ingredients or go through as the cooking steps. Expanded info on nutrition would be more helpful

I really enjoy that this book is broken down by symptoms and how to make the best food for those symptoms like nausea and more.

Great recipes, easy and tasty, I kept using this cookbook months after my treatment was over.

I am considering buying this book for a family member who is going through treatments. I was reading the reviews and most of them are helpful and constructive.The one about "shame, shame, shame" because of the use of carbs needs to be removed. Some chemo patients lose a lot of weight during treatment and require more carbs in their diets to help them gain or at the very best maintain. Carbs are not bad, if had in moderation.So please don't let that review steer you away from this particular cookbook.

I was given this book when my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was a God send. So much information & tips … more than just recipes. I buy this book when I hear a friend, friend of a friend or family have been diagnosed with cancer.
