Cheaply Made, Don't Believe The Hype!
Believing the hype, that these socks were comfortable and long lasting, I bought 4 packs when they went on sale. I know how to care for my clothing, I am meticulous and careful, not only in wearing my clothes but storing and cleaning. Despite my care these things are already coming apart just over a month after use. The reviewers that are critical of recent quality control are to be believed, these things are worse than the Hanes brand I'd been using for years before.I like how they fit, and they feel thick and plush, so they are comfortable.I DO NOT like that the elastic is already coming out of the sock, like pulling a thread on a sweater and watching it unravel. What good is a crew sock with no elastic to keep it from slipping down my calf? If you examine the stitching around the elastic inside the sock it looks flimsy, totally unlike the well reinforced cheapy Hanes socks I used to buy which NEVER had this problem.I won't bother wasting your time with a longer review than this; these are just poorly made, definitely not worth your money. Not recommended.

Gold Toe - formerly great socks
I've worn Gold Toe socks for years and in the past thought they were the best socks available. Well, like much else one buys, the quality is not what it used to be. The first thing I noticed is that they were small and uncomfortably tight, and they remain so after several washings and wearings (I'm the same size I've always been, so it isn't me). Making products smaller is a widespread phenomenon for items that are sold in large quantities - a little less material and a tiny bit more profit for each item. In addition to the size reduction, I've had several elastic failures so the socks go from too tight to unwearably baggy; this is a problem I almost never had with dozens of pairs of Gold Toes I've worn in the past. I really should give these one star, but I imagine there are probably worse socks out there. Extremely disappointing to see a once good product go down the tubes.

Good socks for the money, but not great.
These are very good socks for $14. The material is soft, and so far I have had them for 2 months and no problems with the material. I also dry them on the normal cycle, and although others have said use low temps, I haven't had any bad results. But, two things keep me from giving five stars. First, the comments about the lint on the inside are all more than valid. I have worn, washed, and dried these (wash/dry inside out) for three cycles now, and I still get black lint on my feet and on my other clothes that come out of the dryer. Other black socks have given me the same problem, but never after this many washes/uses. I hope this stops soon.Second, they are very warm. I'd almost call this a winter sock, because my feet sweat in them all the time that I wear them (I've had them since the beginning of summer). I don't really get this problem with other socks, but with these, it's pretty bad.But overall, it's a good sock for the value, just keep those two caveats in mind.

OK
These socks do shed, a lot. The feel is very much like a normal white athletic sock except its black. The shedding doesn't really bother me.What I do like is they tend to stay up on your ankle like an athletic sock rather than sag down like the thin dress socks. Since they look more like athletic socks than dress socks I guess one wouldn't call them elegant, but real men don't pay any attention to each others socks so I wouldn't hesitate to wear them formally anywhere. They are thicker than normal and give you a little more cushion, and I suspect more blister protection, although I haven't tested that yet. After one week I got no complaints.

Goodbye, Hanes, Gold Toe is my new standard
I'm a practical guy... I find a sock that works and I fill my drawer with those socks. If all my socks match exactly, my morning goes more smoothly.Until six months ago, I was a Hanes guy... I swore by their black cotton crew socks. Then they started using a cheaper cotton... I could just feel the difference. I was checking the label to see if I'd accidentally purchased synthetic and was surprised to see they were the usual cotton. I have older Hanes socks that have turned grey over the years because they were so durable, but my newer Hanes didn't even make it six months before I wore holes in them.I shopped around and took a chance on the Gold Toe... and six months later, I'd swear they're still new! These are more comfortable than Hanes ever were. The fabric is slightly thicker and the ribbing is thicker... they "stay up" better than the Hanes did, and they're very comfortable to wear around the house on my hard floors without shoes. My feet love 'em, and my wallet is still happy. They cost more than Hanes, but the quality shows and in the long term, cost a lot less. I just ordered my third package of six. (I don't like running out of socks, and I have run through the last of my Hanes. My drawer's all Gold Toe now.)

The Incredibly TERRIBLE SHRINKING Socks
My husband has worn Gold Toe socks for many years. He wears a size 13-14 shoe and in the past they have fit great. I purchased 2 packs of these new socks; which just barely fit when he tried them. I washed the socks and was SHOCKED to find that they had shrunk to about half their original size. They do not fit his feet at all now. They barely fit me and I wear a women's size 10 shoe, which is equal to a men's size 8. The QUALITY NO LONGER EXISTS in the manufacturing of this sock brand!I would NEVER suggest that someone buys this Gold Toe Sock. I hope that the company will find it good business sense to go back to quality thread material even if it means a higher price for the socks. THIS IS THE MOST DISAPPOINTING PURCHASE I HAVE MADE! HORRIBLE SOCKS- I wanted to rate them zero!
