Feadog 'D' Irish Tin Penny Whistle In Black

I have been playing inexpensive tin whistles, (mostly bought from Chinese companies.) Most of them are ok. I like to fight for a note. It teaches me things about the structure of the instrument. So, Feadog is different. I found it much more agreeable than the "cheapees." It has a little attitude in the tamber that I was able to control with ombrocher (sp?,) And opening my throat. Very nice tone. Upper register is so much easier to get. In short, I'm very happy with the Feadog. If you are just starting out, start with this. If you are playing cheap whistles -- get one of these! Feadog is old. Tried and true. I hope this helps you decide. Good price, too. PW

As far as playability goes, for the price, this whistle is great. It plays well in both octaves. With any whistle it takes a bit of getting used to but is very consistent and has a nice soft tone. Out of the three that I own it is my favorite. I knocked a star off due to packaging alone. It came wrapped in bubble wrap despite being advertised in a little box with some identifying branding. It made me feel like it could be a bootleg since aside from the sticker on the whistle there is no other real identification. Bootleg or not it is worth the buy if you are interested in learning to play.

This is a beautiful penny whistle with a good sound. It's actually from Ireland - arrived in packaging from overseas. Looks really sharp all black.

Couldn't play it. 2/24/25 update: just updating to say that I could never reach anyone to even discuss a refund or replacement for this whistle that came out of the box completely smashed. They did however delete my review off this page once and I had to re-upload it. I would recommend nobody go through this and just buy a better whistle in general.

I am a total beginner, so read what follows in that context. The whistle is quite playable but very prone to sounding "airy" or "whistley" - as if air is escaping somewhere that it should not be. I would put it down entirely to my playing if I had not tried a different whistle (made by the same company, but at least 30 years old) and not had the same problem. That old whistle is also more tolerant to slight changes in pressure. At the low price for this instrument, I can't call it "bad", and a different whistle of the same type might play just fine. I'm going to keep on playing this whistle, but will most likely also buy another with a different kind of whistle-top to see if I can get a better sound more consistently.
