The trap had been set and placed in the flower bed. When I approached the trap I startled the chipmunk, which obviously was NOT dead. Now what? Had to catch the chipmunk with a trap on its head and place it in a bucket of water. At least for our chipmunks, this trap is not strong enough. Description lists the word "rat" so a chipmunk seemed like a reasonable expectation. I sincerely doubt it. The rat would have to be a very small rat (like the size of a mouse) to humanely kill it. After making the catch a little more trigger happy, I finally caught just one. After these things snap shut a few times they will not set open.
