I imagine they can hold up to coffee or hot chocolate for at least a couple of hours. I feel like all disposable kitchen waste should be biodegradable. Up until recently, one would have to significantly sacrifice quality and cost to go compostable. Not anymore. It should be illegal for commercial food service to use nonbiodegradable utensils, plates, napkins, straws, cups, or bowls these days. The wrapping for the straws is a nice touch as is the bendability of the straw.
