The Reason for God Discussion Guide: Conversations on Faith and Life

Very good book
Tim Keller does a great job of answering some of the age old questions and objections regarding Christianity. He definitely puts it in a context that the average person today would understand. I think it will especially appeal to younger people. I am age 60 and I liked it. I think his church is primarily comprised of younger, smart, urban dwellers and he seems to really have a gift for speaking to them. He makes a very persuasive, logical case for Christianity. Perhaps the best point he makes is that even supposed non-faith, agnostic, or atheist positions are in fact based on faith. For instance, the person who says four blind people approaching an elephant might describe an elephant as being four different things depending on whether they grabbed the trunk, the tail, a leg, or an ear; is in a sense saying, “I am the one person who sees clearly. I really know what the elephant looks like.” That same person might also say, “I know the truth and the truth is that all roads/faiths/religions lead to God.” That person is in fact making a faith statement. It just doesn’t appear to be one. No living person can by mere reason or scientific evidence establish the fact that in fact all the world’s religions lead to the same place hereafter. If you are going to look down on people of faith, please have the honesty to admit that you are a person of faith as well. If you’re an unbeliever in Christianity, your faith assumes that there is no God. My faith assumes that there is. My belief though is not an intellectually inferior position to yours.

Good, scholarly.
Pretty good series but be forewarned, Dr. Keller doesn't resolve any of the concerns of the persons in the video. The video is simply designed to show open dialogue with those outside the faith and "get the wheels turning" for those in your group. If you are not familiar with any of the common answers to the big atheistic problems such as, "Why does a good God send people to Hell?" or "Can their really be only one way to God?" and are not prepared to lead a group discussion through these, this series is not for you. Just be ready to open the box of tough questions, we don't want to bring questions to mind if were not prepared to deal with them is all.Additionally, some of my group members did complain about the more articulate language used, but that isn't really too big of an issue. If you've read the book The Reason for God, this will be no problem. God bless.

Challenge your perceptions
The study guide for The Reason for God is designed to work with the DVD, helping small groups interact about the information they watched on the DVD. Many Christians don't know how to talk to non-Christians. Tim Keller is doing just that, and he shows his audience how to have a conversation with those why don't believe as you do, and how not to make it about trying to get them to agree with you. Learning how to listen to others has become sort of a lost art.

Glosses over a few of the harder discussions, but very solid all around
I'm a big fan of Tim Keller's work and this book/DVD/guide is excellent. I'm only withholding a final star because I felt like many of his answers (especially on the DVD) were a little too "conciliatory" and avoided the inherent hard & fast lines in scripture. Nonetheless, in discussions with people of different faiths -- including secularism/science, which Dr. Keller repeatedly describes as a hypocritical religion unto itself -- it is wise to walk a fine line between friendliness and combativeness.

Awesome study
Awesome study and study guide. Tim Keller has a great way of speaking on a normal people level while also sounding very intelligent. Great study for adults or college aged students.

Taken from I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist
Part way thru this book, used in a Sunday evening class at church, I realized the ideas had been taken from I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FAITH TO BE AN ATHEIST by Geisler and Turek which I found more enlightening. The video that goes with this book is good as a way to learn how to refute the ideas people will use as arguments in your evangelism, but there is more useful science and philosophy in Turek's book.

this assumes the person leading a group study will be pretty sharp and a solid believer
there are more questions than answers here. this assumes the person leading a group study will be pretty sharp and a solid believer. this isn't for people questioning, it's for people who aren't questioning but need to be aware others are.
