Good Morning

A kid pooped himself. That earned 4 stars. Then he pooped himself again. That put this movie over the top. Five stars!Seriously though, it’s a charming little classic about siblings, family, gossip, and misunderstandings. It challenged my attention span but somehow I couldn’t step away. This version was restored excellently. Something about the colors was very pleasing to the eye. Just don’t expect action, unless you think fart jokes count.

This is a study in layers of meaning, layers so fine they are almost transparent. On the surface this is a comedy of misunderstandings, stereotypes, and intergenerational conflict. Below that this is a photographer's film. I think the color is intentional - Ozu used agfa stock which had a slightly unreal quality to it. Each shot is carefully composed, and once you're into it, quite beautiful. Below that, the running comment is how language is as important to life as passing gas. Even deeper, life is changing quickly - the economy is changing right under the parents' noses - beatniks, salesmen, American electronics, unemployment, forced retirement. Pretty heavy stuff for a scatalogical comedy. Finally, optomistically even, Ozu suggests that for love, language is relatively unimportant, and action is the real substance of character - be it helping a friend start over, smiling while being a stern father, or choosing to ride the train with a potential mate, even if you can't afford to marry. A comedy that is high art - with fart jokes - how can you go wrong?

One of my favorite Ozu's! Like most of his work, it is an examination of a rapidly changing postwar Japan, this time from the perspective of two brothers who want a television set. Their parents refuse, leading to a vow of silence. It is also funny, something not common in Ozu's most popular works, it has the most artfully done fart jokes in cinema! Also of note, is how relatable this is now, both for your inner child, as well as the adult in you. Would recommend, an excellent gateway to foreign cinema if you are new to that.

I discovered Good Morning about 20 years ago on DVD and immediately fell in love with it. It's charming, sweet and innocently humorous. Unless you're a complete curmudgeon, you will enjoy this film. I was thrilled to get it on blu-ray (again - I also have the UK BD). The picture and sound are fantastic and nothing is lost. I enjoyed the special features, but was disappointed there's no commentary track.

Ozu has been called the most Japanese of all Japanese directors, and for good reason, he is. Ohayo (Good Morning) is Ozu at his Japanese best. There is a misunderstanding among the neighborhood ladies. Some club money has turned up missing. The misunderstanding is compounded by two boys, who after an argument with their parents, are told to shut up. The boys want a television set, the parents do not. The boys take their parents admonition to shut up to the extreme, they stop speaking to everybody, even the neighborhood ladies. These ladies find that their customary greetings of ohayo (good morning) to the boys goes unanswered. The ladies feel that the boys mother is angry at them and a neighborhood quarrel ensues. Finally the parents relent, the boys get their television set so life resumes to normality once again, everyone is happy. No action, just everyday life.

This movie is hilarious. The whole family was cracking at the little kid. Plus it is interesting to look around the background and look at all the household goods people used at the time.

Ostensibly a superficially slight film about two young brothers who react to their parents refusal to buy a television and their parent’s and other adult’s superfluous talkativeness e.g. ‘good morning; how are you; great weather’ - by refusing to speak. The two brothers also take great delight in getting each other to fart, which is much more amusing than it probably sounds. This film also has quite a bit to say about the pernicious blind alleys that uninformed gossip can take among adults. The film also reflects the creeping Americanisation of Japan, post-war, e.g. TV ownership; baseball. Great performances from Kôji Shitara and Masahiko Shimazu who play the two brothers this film was redolent for me of the slow paced comedies of Jacques Tati and some of the Ealing comedies. A delightful way to spend an hour and a half.

2017年米国Criterionからリリースの4KリマスターBD。1959年松竹製作で、原題は「お早う」、監督は小津安二郎。最近の私にとって小津晩年のカラー作品は、すべてが愛おしくて愛おしくて、仕様がない。本作は当時の典型的な中流階級の子供たちの生態をユーモラスに描いたチャーミングな作品。私は本作を昭和60年新春に、今はない銀座並木座で観ている（併映は「東京物語」）。以来30数年ぶりに観たが、やっぱり面白い。画質は松竹版BDは未見だが、各色彩のメリハリ、解像度そしてノイズの除去の効果など、さすがはCriterion、最高の仕事ぶりである。音質もリマスターされているようで良好である。そして特典映像は、1. 米国の映画評論家Donald Sosin氏による全体的な小津論（もちろん日本語字幕なし）2. 同じく米国の映画評論家David Bordwell氏による「お早う」を中心にした小津論（日本語字幕なし）3. 小津作品「生まれてはみたけれど」（1932年）4. 小津作品「突貫小僧」（1929年）となる。3もレストアされているようで、今まで観た国内発売のDVDよりも白黒のコントラストが明瞭で、画質は良好。4については近年になって不完全なプリントが発見されたもので、保存状態が良くなかったせいもあり雨ふり画面ではあるが、再発見されただけでもありがとう、というレベル。英国のBFIからリリースされたBDも入手して観た。BFI版も画質良好であるが、色彩がやや淡泊な傾向にあるし、特典映像は「生まれてはみたけれど」のみである。ちなみに2019年2月現在のお値段は、松竹版BDが5千円超、BFI版中古は2千円台後半、本ディスクは3千円台前半とやや高めではあるが、前出の通り、特典映像の豪華さと完全無欠の画質はもちろんのこと、ジャケのイラストも作品のイメージにピッタリで、結論としては本ディスクをもって本作の決定版と、太鼓判ですね。

La maggior parte dei film di Ozu non è mai stata doppiata in italiano, e non è facile nemmeno reperire versioni con sottotitoli nella nostra lingua. Questa edizione BFI è in lingua originale e sottotitoli in inglese, e quindi solo chi mastica una di queste due lingue può fruirne. Allora perché cinque stelle? Perché è davvero l'unico difetto che si può imputare a questo prodotto, e per quanto ciò possa sembrare paradossale, mi fa venir voglia di studiare il giapponese - e già me la cavo con l'inglese!Le pellicole offerte in realtà sono due: "Sono nato, ma..." è del 1932, ed è ancora muto (Ozu adottò il sonoro con grande ritardo), "Buon giorno" è del 1959, e sfoggia un colore straordinario. Ci sono molte analogie fra i due film: entrambi trattano dell'insorgere delle prime ribellioni infantili, in entrambi vi sono due fratelli, di cui il maggiore prende l'iniziativa, e il più piccolo emula, con effetti caricaturali. Nell'opera del '32, a scatenare la rabbia nei confronti del padre è la scoperta di come egli debba inchinarsi al potere, per garantire un'esistenza degna alla propria famiglia. A distanza di 27 anni, nel secondo film ad accendere la miccia sembra una ragione simile, cioè l'incomprensibilità del linguaggio conformista degli adulti.Ma l'esito è profondamente diverso, e rivela la diversa origine del conflitto - e l'evoluzione della visione di Ozu. Nel caso di "Sono nato, ma...", il figlio finisce per comprendere il comportamento del padre - si arrende, per così dire. In "Buon giorno", al contrario, tutto torna a posto quando il padre, finalmente, decide di acquistare il televisore che il figlio desiderava tanto - e che era all'origine della contestazione.Inoltre, sebbene entrambi i film siano ambientati nella periferia urbana della città, la prospettiva è completamente diversa. Nel film muto, si vede il sobborgo crescere in modo caotico e contraddittorio, con ampie aree ancora inutilizzate, attraversate da un andirivieni frenetico di treni; e ciò malgrado, figli e genitori finiscono per sedersi nel cortile di casa, per scrutare un orizzonte che, fra un treno e l'altro, è ancora visibile. Nel film più recente, ambientato in un Giappone pronto al gran balzo industriale, la periferia è un agglomerato di casette tutte uguali, che quasi entrano l'una nell'altra, con spazi aperti angusti - e senza alcun orizzonte: ciò che si vede, una volta fuori, è l'alto terrapieno su cui scorre la strada. L'intero quartiere sembra giacere in un fosso, e il senso che se ne ricava è claustrofobico e angosciante.Nota tecnica: è già un miracolo che alcune delle pellicole di Ozu ante-guerra siano sopravvissute, quindi non è peccato se "Sono nato, ma..." non è proprio la perfezione. Ma il colore di "Buon giorno" è sbalorditivo. Nelle campiture estese della stessa tinta si nota una evidente granulosità - come ad esempio nelle inquadrature del cielo azzurro, e ciò può sembrare una imperfezione. Tuttavia, considerata la morbidezza e pastosità dei colori io penso che Ozu abbia usato una pellicola ad alta sensibilità - chi sa di fotografia, capisce cosa intendo. Il risultato è davvero straordinario.Se potete superare l'ostacolo della lingua, è un acquisto immancabile.

Yasujiro Ozu ist 1903 in Tokio geboren und dort 1963 gestorben. Er ist der 'japanischste' der großen japanischen Regisseure. Ozus Filme beschäftigen sich vor allem mit Familiengeschichten - d. h. mit den Besonderheiten der japanischen Familie der Mittelschicht. Die Kameraarbeit besteht oft aus langen Einstellungen mit wenig Bewegung, und es wird fast immer aus Augenhöhe aufgenommen - oft aus der von am Boden sitzenden Akteuren. Das führt zu einer meditativen Ruhe und Schönheit, die wir im westlichen Kino kaum gewohnt sind."Ohayo" (Guten Morgen) [Good morning] von 1959 - das mag Japans Antwort auf Tatis "Mon Oncle" gewesen sein. Auch hier wird eine Komödie großteils aus Kinderperspektive erzählt, es geht um den Gegensatz zwischen der Tradition und dem 'American Way of Life' - wie auch den zwischen zwei Generationen (wie auch schon 1932 beim hier auf DVD mitgelieferten Stummfilm-Vorläufer). Auch die Musik lehnt sich z. T. an Tati an. Aber bei "Mon Oncle" waren die Kinder Komplizen des Technik-Feindes Tati, während sie bei Ozu geradezu die Anschaffung der neuen Technik - des Fernsehens - erzwingen. Ozu ist da ehrlicher: Die Kinder sind noch weniger mit den Traditionen verbunden, erliegen leichter der Bequemlichkeit des 'American Way of Life'.Schon im Stummfilm "Umarete wa mita keredo" (Ich wurde geboren, aber...) [I was born, but] geht es um zwei Kinder in einem japanischen Vorort entlang einer Eisenbahn-Linie. Sie haben es in dieser für sie neuen Umgebung schwer, mitzuhalten - erst mit Hilfe eines Älteren setzen sie sich körperlich durch und dürfen bei der Kinder-Bande mitmischen. Da gibt es dann immer wieder das (gegenseitige) Ritual, sich auf eine Geste hin auf den Boden zu legen und wieder aufzustehen. Unter den Kindern ist der Sohn des Chefs vom Vater - er lädt sie mit zu einer Filmvorführung ein. Dort wird aber nicht nur der Film, sondern auch der Vater "vorgeführt" - der sich aber durch übermäßiges Grimassenschneiden auch dazu angeboten hat. Das unterwürfige, lächerliche Gebaren ihres Vaters wollen die Kinder nicht akzeptieren und rebellieren. Der Vater gibt ihnen zu verstehen, dass sie ohne seine Unterwürfigkeit nicht zur Schule gehen könnten und hungern müssten. Die Kinder beginnen einen Hungerstreik, den sie aber schon am nächsten Morgen aus Hunger wieder aufgeben. Sie müssen sich mit den sozialen Realitäten arrangieren. - Wie hier Ozu das Thema sozialer Hierarchien ernsthaft und gleichzeitig mit großem Witz thematisiert, ist schon ein Geniestreich. Um so erstaunlicher, dass der Film in der Zeit des japanischen Militarismus entstehen konnte. - Die neue Filmmusik hätte ruhig witziger sein können - ob die bei TRIGON erschienene Fassung mit anderer Musik und deutschen Untertiteln besser ist, weiß ich nicht (sie ist auch leider meist nur bei der Firma selbst für etwa 25€ + Porto erhältlich).In "Ohayo" nimmt Ozu einige Handlungsstränge wieder auf. Die Kinder werden von den Eltern getadelt, weil sie ihre Englisch-Lektionen versäumen, um stattdessen im neuen Fernseher der Nachbarn Sumo-Ringen anzusehen. Das hier immer wiederholte Kinder-Ritual besteht aus gegenseitigem Anstupsen der Stirn und anschließendem Furzen. Die Kinder zetteln einen Krach mit ihren Eltern an, weil die keinen Fernseher ("idiot box") kaufen wollen. Die Eltern befehlen ihnen entnervt, den Mund zu halten. Also treten die Kinder in Sprech-Streik - ein Gespräch von Älteren übers Wetter oder ein "Guten Morgen" (von Älteren für "soziales Schmiermittel" gehalten) halten sie wiederum für überflüssig. Das Schweigegelübde mit Grußverweigerung führt zu diversen Missverständnissen in der Nachbarschaft - Ozu zeigt das mit viel Charme und Sympathie für die Figuren. Der Generationenkonflikt verläuft hier auch zwischen Eltern und Großeltern. Am Ende führt der dann doch angeschaffte Fernseher zu einem Happy End. - Beim ersten Sehen wirkt das alles recht glatt, bei öfterem Anschauen wohl eher als ein ungeheuer raffiniert konstruiertes, aber sehr entspanntes Meisterstück. Eine deutsche Synchronfassung war bei ARTE 2003 zu sehen, ist aber leider nicht erhältlich.Insgesamt muss man sagen, dass gerade der Vergleich der zwei Filme und der Unterschiede zwischen ihnen dem Zuschauer viele wertvolle Einblicke in die Film-Welt Ozus liefern kann. Ich freue mich schon auf ein nochmaliges Wiedersehen dieser Filme. [Bezieht sich auf die BFI-Edition]

Good Morning is relatively slight almost lightweight Ozu (you can tell from the almost Carry On strains in the music only occasionally contrasted with the plangent yearning of more serious fare and the melodious children in the background round the school), this is nevertheless priceless in all departments. Acting is as usual magically restrained (the Ryu family and the lovers who can't talk about more than the nice day they are experiencing) and cynically gossipy or comically bitter in the more dysfunctional house where the boy who can't fart lives. And of course the amazing pitch-perfect rebellious children. You couldn't make it up, but he (and Noda the co-writer) did! Wonderful entertainment, if you watch fully attending of course. There is as much to see and admire (swoon over) in the composition of washing lines and underpants as many films manage in 2 hours of smash and burn.
