It could possibility sew through 2 layers of canvas with the correct needle but that is about as heavy as it could take. I have no problem sewing up to 3 layers of denim or 2 layers of upholstery vinyl, but heavier items could damage the machine. It is a wonderful little machine that I use 6-8 hours daily but really not designed for industrial sewing of heavy utility fabrics. **Q: Can I use my metal bobbins in my machine or do I need to use the plastic ones?** A: All top load machines use plastic bobbins except for older early singers with metal bobbin case,there is a magnetic ring attached to the hook center that holds the plastic bobbin case from rattling and to slow its movement, if you use metal bobbins they become held by the magnetic transfer through the bobbin case floor (metal) and limit or restrict bobbin rotation,if you remove the magnet you can use the metal bobbins,however it will be noisey and excelarate wear on the bobbin case **Q: does this machine have foot pedal?** A: It does have a foot pedal which is on the short side but I have it anchored on a wood flooring sample with double sided tape. That solves the problem of it not quite reaching the floor, and because the pedal is light as a feather it was always turned around, upside down or on it’s side when I went to step on it but not now. **Q: can a beginner use this machine.. i am thinking about the speed** A: Yes - This is one of the easiest machines to use. You will get used to the foot pedal very fast to control the speed. I have given several of these machines away as presents. I also keep two of these machines at all times.They get used of leather work, quilting and wearable art such as jackets and shirts. A great machine !!! ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A troglodyte's review *by on Reviewed in the United States August 20, 2018* I was hesitant to leave a review, as I'm so woefully ignorant of the sewing arts and the black magics of how sewing machines work; but then I thought my inexperience might help others out, so here goes.Despite having a family who sewed, and many friends who made costumes for Ren Faire and comic/ gaming conventions, no amount of begging or pleading has ever gotten one of these lousy #%&!'s to teach me how to use a sewing machine. However, as is wont from time to time (and especially for one who engages in crafting of all sorts), I have found myself in need of joining two pieces of fabric together, preferably in a manner that doesn't look like a sugar-high child with a glue-stick did the affixing. Therefore, at three different times in my life, I've determined to learn how to operate one of these machines, or die trying (or, well... go naked trying!)First was a cheap Singer I bought new some 20-years ago. I don't recall much about it, or the model number... again, 20 years ago... except that I could never get it to work. And by "work" I mean I never managed to even get a straight stitch on scrap fabric. The machine was fine, as a friend made a gloriously beautiful cloak on it for me, but I couldn't get the hang of it. The second time was two years ago, when I borrowed another friend's Bernini that was so old, the user's manual read like those "Good Housekeeping" articles we all laugh and make fun of now, complete with women wearing pearls and heels while sewing. That time I managed to complete a couple of small projects, though not very cleanly and not without breaking dozens of needles.Third time's a charm! I bought this Singer 4423 because, once again, I found myself needing to merge nylon straps together, and there was no other option. So emboldened by my success with the old Bernini, I took the plunge... and am really glad I did! Again, I must warn you, I'm not doing anything fancy, so far just straight stitching straps together... but this machine has been a breeze to set up and operate. The quick start guide had me spooled up and sewing within minutes of taking it out of the box. Threading the machine is incredibly easy for idiots like me because each step is numbered ON THE MACHINE!!! Never once had to refer back to the owner's manual when changing thread! Three tries on some tiny nylon straps to figure out where my tension needed to be set, and I was off and running after that. If people didn't know any better, it actually looked like I knew what I was doing!The one common complaint that had me worried before ordering was that people complained that the pedal was too sensitive. Well, again, I've only ever used two machines other than this one, but the pedal sensitivity and speed on the 4423 is no different than either of those older machines. I don't think anybody who learned on an older machine will have any problems here. (Am I saying that if I can modulate speed just fine, then others can too? Yes, yes I am).I am pleased with this machine. Very idiot-proof, durable enough that I spent today sewing strap after strap, and never once broke a needle or snapped a thread. No issues. Just sowed my wife's blue jeans and it had no problems sewing through 2 layers denim(waist top seam) and through the belt loop top attache point.
