## Overview

D'Addario Flat Tops Phosphor Bronze Strings EFT17 (13-56 gauge) are precision wound acoustic guitar strings crafted in the USA. Featuring a phosphor bronze wrap over a high-carbon steel core, they deliver a warm, balanced tone with reduced finger noise, making them ideal for recording and slide playing. Durable and smooth, these strings are a trusted standard for acoustic guitarists seeking professional sound and feel.

## Description

As a half round phosphor bronze acoustic guitar set, Flat Tops are designed to significantly reduce unwanted finger noise. Combining tried-and-true phosphor bronze tone with a smoother feel and quieter playing experience, they’re excellent for recording—and slide guitar playing. Flat Tops are made with a high carbon steel core and phosphor bronze wrap wire, which is then precision ground and polished, leaving behind a semi-flat string with a smooth feel and beautifully balanced tone.

Review: The best strings for acoustic electric guitars - I play an acoustic electric. When I first got an AE 12 years ago I was dismayed at how much string squeak was amplified. In desperation, I tried flat wound strings for electric guitars. That reduced the string squeak significantly, but the tone was flat and tinny. Then I discovered D'Addario Flat Tops. They are round wound, but with the tops of the round wire shaved off. There is a little more string squeak than with flat wounds, but the tone is as good as a good round wound. I've used nothing else for over 10 years. I've tried both the medium and light gauges. My playing style works better with the medium gauge -- which is a rather "heavy" medium. The strings are also very durable, with a set lasting several months with regular playing. Only once have I broken a flat top string while playing. Given the increasing popularity of acoustic electrics, I don't understand why these strings aren't more common.
Review: Guitar time - Great strings play alot of blues these strings hold up and just very nice to play and they sound bright luv them.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: My old fingers cant manage heavier gage strings anymore. anybody happy with "extra lights" 10-47's ? is the ease of play worth the loss in tone?**
A: You might try silk and phosphor 11- 47. They play easily while maintaining the more traditional tone. .115 - 47 silk and steel play well but are very mellow tonally. Alot has to do with the guitar itself and of course personal preference. Additionally, you may have to set the guitar up again. The strings will ride slightly lower in the saddle and nut. And they will not pull the neck as much. No easy way other than trial and error. I have 17 acoustics and have tried several sets on each guitar before settling on what I like on that particular guitar. Only 2 of the 17 uses the same strings. Good luck.

**Q: Anyone using these for fingerstyle blues? What do you think of them?**
A: I only play fingerstyle, and I play blues, jazz, pop...I LOVE these strings. If you're not plugged in you may notice a little less volume. Nothing drastic. They sound a bit more "warm." Slides are sweet. They're not that expensive. (I have used another brand that cost something like $30. They are a little nicer, but I can't afford that luxury all the time.) Try a set. Your fingers will thank you.

**Q: Is the core in of the d'addario eft15 round core?**
A: Down in the product details at the bottom of the page -- "D'Addario Phosphor Bronze strings are precision wound with corrosion-resistant phosphor bronze onto a carefully drawn, hexagonally shaped, high carbon steel core. "

Note the "hexagonally shaped, high carbon steel core" so NOT a round core.

**Q: Wait a second, the title for the item is flattened, the description page says roundwound, and one of the answers says they are halfwound. Which is it?**
A: They are flattened. Flat round is a different type of string. Basically its like the small humps of the round string are ground down .

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Guitar time

Great strings play alot of blues these strings hold up and just very nice to play and they sound bright luv them.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for resonator slide guitar!
*by J***S on August 9, 2026*

Excellent! I use them on resonators for slide. Cuts annoying string zing. Warm but retains clarity. They’re not cheap but they’re worth it for bottleneck style playing.
