Q: Are the mugs black? or brown? do they match the plate colorwise?

The mugs are a dark chocolate brown. They go well with the plates, colorwise, but are darker than the brown on the plates.

Q: Are these dishes lead free?

Absolutely! This is not an old design. So cute and hard to break. I especially like them because they don't weigh a ton or take up much space in the cupboard. I have some older ones that are worth MORE money because they become collectors items.

Q: What color are the cups? To me they look like they could be black? I want brown.

The cups are a chocolate brown. They are very nice. The plates have the greenish decorations and lighter brown around the edges. I really like them.
