I chose this rating because there wasn't three and a half stars. I liked the book but didn't love it. A lot of things I wouldn't make, some looked pretty good. More for a family rather than a couple. I like having it in my collection though.

Awesome recipes.

We bought this cookbook on a whim at a gas station display years ago, and it has been in constant use since then. Our favorite section is on making sourdough starter and then the multiple bread recipes. There are also many helpful sidebars about the realities of cooking on the pioneer trail. Ever wondered how to make a loaf of bread without yeast, sourdough starter, or baking powder? Just look up the section on salt-rising bread.
