Great to teach shading to a beginner!
My son wanted to learn shading and this book taught him well! We did one lesson based on the shading chapter and he's been shading everything he draws every since. Straight forward and great for kids. I love this book!

Greet content and illustration for any beginning artist.
This is really a 4.5 but had to round up. Very detailed book. Soft gloss pages. Pastel shades for various sections. Content: Everyone Can Draw (motivational/encouraging); The Drawing Toolbox (basic supplies); Chpt 1 Open your Artist's Eyes; Chpt 2 Line Drawing; Chpt 3 Light and Shadow; Chpt 4 Proportion and Scale; Chpt 5 Perspective (great chapter on the lines and views; Chpt 6 Drawing Faces (focus on individual elements them combining); Chpt 7 Drawing Bodies (seeing the joints and proportion); Chpt 8 Anything Can Happen (imagination and creativity vs reality)...112 pages of instructions, examples and tips. It loses half star only because I feel it is a little too wordy for kids...not really child reading. My daughter flipped through the book and didn't want to read just wanted to try. She wants new to read it and relay the information and she is an avid reader who loves to draw. She started on the eye as she got the book today. But I rounded up because the content is great and she may read it if she is having problems following the diagram. Will update over time...she's jostling me for it as I was noting the chapters. Watching details and not reading. We'll see.

All the basics
The book has all the basics needed by a child interested in learning the tools and techniques of drawing. I purchased Drawing, along with “Advanced Drawing” for my granddaughter.

Not really for kids
This is suitable maybe for adolescents but not for younger children. My brighter year old, who is a competent reader and has taken a number of art classes, couldn't really follow it. Frankly, I didn't get much instruction out of either, when trying it for myself. The book is probably OK for a high school student with existing art skills, but the title is very misleading. It is not a good fit for kids.

I wanted a present for a 10 year old friend who wants to draw but lacks confidence. This book encourages, not in a prescriptive way, but using techniques that I as an adult have found gave me the confidence to draw again after many years of not doing so. She seems delighted with it, so I hope she will now get as much enjoyment out of drawing as I do.

I bought this book for our young kids (5 &6) who have shown interest in drawing. When we got it, I found myself explaining the illustrations to them as well as describing the text found within. Before long, they were starting to approach their drawing in a more step by step fashion and their work, although still rudimentary, was much more defined and structured. They are really happy with what they are producing. What was unexpected for me, was that as I was helping them, I noticed that I too was drawing and learning. I have absolutely NO artistic skills whatsoever, or.... I didn't. I now find myself drawing in ways that I never thought possible and as time is passing, things are getting better and better. Not just for me but for the kids as well. My wife on the other hand, does really nice work and even for her, this book has taught her things that she had not practiced before. All 4 of us, as a family, are using this book and loving it. 3 different skill levels and we are all getting something out of it. I don't know how we could possibly ask for more. What a fantastic experience and value. As time goes on, it will continue to help us all be better. To say nothing about the (non digital) quality time that we are all enjoying together.
