## Description

This stunning "dystopian feminist eco-thriller" from an award-winning South Korean author "takes on climate change, sexual assault, greed, and dark tourism" ( Ms. Magazine ). Welcome to the desert island of Mui, where a paid vacation to paradise is nothing short of a disaster in this "mordantly witty novel [that] reads like a highly literary, ultra-incisive thriller" ( Refinery29 ). Jungle is a cutting-edge travel agency specializing in tourism to destinations devastated by disaster and climate change. And until she found herself at the mercy of a predatory colleague, Yona was one of their top representatives. Now on the verge of losing her job, she's given a proposition: take a paid "vacation" to the desert island of Mui and pose as a tourist to assess the company's least profitable holiday. When she uncovers a plan to fabricate an extravagant catastrophe, she must choose: prioritize the callous company to whom she's dedicated her life, or embrace a fresh start in a powerful new position? An eco-thriller with a fierce feminist sensibility, The Disaster Tourist introduces a fresh new voice to the United States that engages with the global dialogue around climate activism, dark tourism, and the #MeToo movement.

Review: Holiday nightmare - A very unusual story, an interesting concept, holiday to a disaster area. What happens when the disaster becomes old news? Perhaps someone can ‘plan’ a ‘natural’ disaster to get tourists to come.....exploiting vulnerable and poor in remote areas, island etc....a scary thought!
Review: Thought-provoking - I absolutely loved this book! It offers a brilliant exploration of how humans are continuously confronted with natural disasters but when these events don't directly impact us, we can become so disconnected that they can morph into entertainment. In this book Jungle profits by offering vacation packages to the sites of these catastrophes. People pay a premium to visit disaster-stricken areas. A long time employee goes on one of their vacations and learns just how far people are willing to go to profit from human suffering. What an outstanding and thought-provoking story!

### ⭐⭐⭐ Not a good fit for me.
*by S***M on September 11, 2020*

I liked the initial premise but thought the book fell flat. While I like the idea of suspending reality, too much of this didn’t connect in a way I could get into it. The relationships for instance were too far off, and not sufficiently developed to make sense. Also hated the ending as there was no sense of what would have happened next. It would have been good to have tied this back to the tour company in some way.
