Sweet Jones: Pimp C's Trill Life Story

When I initially ordered this book I was expecting a couple of interesting insights, behind the scene stories of the legendary Pimp C, and some decent writing. Instead what I began reading was 750+ pages of truly gripping and impressive writing and research. This essentially is a giant Textbook that not only covers the events in the life of the iconic Chad Butler, but also the context behind many defining moments in Pimps life (label woes, personal/family issues, financial issue, Prolific “beefs”) and goes above and beyond in every imaginable way to offer readers an unbiased, honest, and often touching biography behind a very complex and layered individual. Julia Beverly does an IMACULATE job! Without giving too much away, expect to be surprised, touched, and educated in the history of Pimp C and his associates. My personal favorite part discusses his time and personal growth behind bars. The fact this book also has photographs of rap lyrics, family members, associates, prison letters and even tax forms from C’s life, shows that Beverly is not only capable of masterfully retelling a legends life story but also illustrates her capabilities as a researcher/reporter. Never in my life have I finished a piece of literature so massive and been left desperately wanting more. My only request is that Beverly continues her writing career as clearly she is an incredibly gifted and competent author. MUST BUY!!!!!

I received this today and I just had to say wow this is an incredible looking book. On top of the in depth writing and picture inserts there’s pictures and documentation of court papers , rhymes etc this book is thorough and obviously written with a lot of thought and love. I know I’m prematurely posting cause I haven’t read it yet but I just had to commend the writer and quality of this book. One of my favorite books in school was AMERICAN HARDCORE , a documentation of hardcore punk in the 70s to 90s and it had tons of pictures drawings etc and this reminds me of that iconic book. Even though I was a baby not too long after UGK released Ridin Dirty in Summer 1996(born in February 1997), years later in 2006, I heard Pimp C's Hogg In The Game randomly on the Rap Music channel on Music Choice. Over the years, I started to love UGK's music after Pimp C died. Like Mobb Deep, UGK were very underrated. The book was very detailed. It gives a reader a depiction of the events that surrounded each UGK album. I didn't even know that Jeezy and Pimp had a issue over Jeezy charging him a invoice. If you're a UGK fan, buy the book and make sure to buy their albums on here too(Super Tight, Ridin Dirty, etc). If u like Pimp C's brashness like I did when I heard the ATL interview on YouTube, you'll be in for a surprise. The book is definitely worth the buy. Julia Beverly did a good job with it as well.

being from the south gives us opportunities to hear rumors that are pretty accurate, and this book proves them right... from the "master p beef to lil troy to probs with Ludacris/smoke d" Julia puts its all in this book...this book should be $50.00-100.00... I am truly proud of her, and this book explains the insanity that one must face to have a personal life, and an alter ego called an "image" chad was a nerdy, smart, cool guy that used "pimp c" to mask his fears, childhood problems....Julia explains his reasons for being who he became, and has incredible pictures to provide the imagery needed...honestly I read the book in a day and a half...it was like reading while watching the scenes play out in your mind.... pimp c will never get the artistic credit he deserved.... from his signature hi hats, to live instrumentation, singing his own vocals, playing multiple instruments, using his voice to his advantage.... the only person that I never met, that I cried when he passed on.... dude was trill and lived a hell of a life that only rick james/marvin gaye/George Clinton could only understand.... if you love pimp c/ugk or have a passion to read period, get this book asap..... long live the pimp

This book was AMAZING, far exceeded my expectations, VERY detailed, accurate, and an in depth look into Pimp C. Not just a look into his music but who Chad Butler REALLY was. The man that he became through his life experiences in and outside of the rap game. A handful of info in this book is rare and interesting. Much in fact, you cannot put it down. I have a Huge amount of Respect for Pimp C. After reading his Trill Life Story, it made me not only respect him more but Love his body of work that much more. No one will ever be able to re-create or duplicate this man. The fact that his sound, his artistry is so unique if anyone attempted to mimic his work, the whole world could see Only the Pimp. Music has not been the same since his departure but his legacy forever will live on. Buy this book today and you won't regret it! #UGK4LIFE

I am a huge UGK fan and I Loved me some Pimp C and when I saw that there was a book written about his life, I was only planning to get the book just because I am huge fan but once I started reading, I was pleased at how well it's written and how detailed it is with capturing the complex ups and downs of the determination of UGK to become the Rap phenomena's that they are today. I am sure "Chad Pimp C" Butler would be very proud of how the book depicted his life story. He was a true example of taking the talent that God blesses us with and using it. His lived the life of a determined man and unfortunately he left this world, just when he was starting to rip the fruits of his labor. I've found myself laughing, getting angry and even crying while reading this book. This is a must read book if you are a true UGK fan or a fan of Southern Rap ( Country Rap Tunes) . "UGK 4 Life!!!"

Simply an outstanding book. 'Exhaustive' really doesn't do the level of research and information Ms Beverly has crammed into it justice. As a long term devotee of Southern rap, and an obsessive fan of Texas hip hop culture, I was absolutely captivated and devoured this 700 page work in 3 days flat. I cannot recommend this book enough. Long live the Pimp!

Si te gusta UGK o Pimp C como solista, te va a flipar. Si te gusta el rap en general te va a flipar. Supercompleto, detallista, con un montón de imágenes. No hace falta saber mucho sobre rap sureño de los 90 y 00 para empaparte de la historia. La maquetación mejorable, pero por ponerle una pega. Recomendable al 100 %.

Not knowing much about UGK, I was convinced into reading this book following Julia's promo tour all over my favourite media outlets such as the breakfast club. Although not a book that you can't wait to pick back up, it is very well written and Julia does a great job in drawing you in. Reading the chapter on Pimp's death - brought me to tears. Julia has done a great job in humanising "The Pimp" Fantastic book!
