Keeps water ice cold all day long
This is the best water bottle I’ve ever used. I love the fact that I can put ice in from the refrigerator dispenser without having it fall all over the place; nearly 3” is the perfect size opening for doing this and almost every other water bottle has a tiny opening which makes ice fall on the floor when you try to fill it from a refrigerator dispenser. The outside of the bottle stays warm to the touch while the inside temperature of the water bottle remains ice cold when you put ice in it. It’s pretty amazing how it works. I fill it about halfway full of ice and add cold water to the fill line, screw the cover back on and head to work around 7:30 am. This water bottle stays in my car until I get home from work usually around 5:30 pm. I’ll open it several times during the drive to take sips, but it remains seated in the cupholder where it fits well in the vehicle. My vehicle has been parked in a parking lot with all windows rolled up in the scorching heat the last few weeks with outside temperatures approaching 90 degrees. I imagine the inside temperature of the vehicle is much hotter. When I get back out to my car after work the bottle is warm to the touch on the outside, but when I take a sip of water it is still just as cold as it was the morning I poured it and the ice is still in there, with very little melting. I have not put warm liquids in this bottle yet so I’m not sure how well it keeps liquids warm. The lock and seal on this bottle are both well engineered. I have never had any leaking or accidental top opening and would feel confident in throwing this bottle in a bag knowing it won’t leak. The lid and seal can be removed to hand wash, but I wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher if you want the seal to stay in good condition. This bottle is my go to bottle now at home and at the office, but it is a must have if you travel. Definitely worth the money you pay and based upon my experience with other similar products this blows the Yeti Rambler out of the water in terms of ice/cold water retention. Fantastic product.

Cyclist's Handlebar Mug! Best of 7 Tested...
I was in search of a "perfect" travel mug to use with a variety of cup holders on my bicycle handlebars. I got tired of paper and plastic cups burbling over and even blowing away during my rides. I generally don't drink my coffee drink during my bike rides, at least not in the same way I would grab a plastic water bicycle water bottle during a ride. Usually, I'm just transporting a coffee drink and trying to keep it hot (or cold), or I may stop to take a sip. There was competition! I ordered a total of seven 16 oz insulated mugs to compare. Here's a quick breakdown with ASIN numbers so you can easily look them up on Amazon: B0039SLSU6 Thermos: Best fitting, and heaviest weight by far (i.e. highest material quality). Unfortunately encumbered by an overly complex lid design that proved problematic out of the box, and looked difficult to clean. B07S1Y48TP Lasting Coffee: Second best fitting. Meh quality. Threaded lid only twists on 1/4 turn and "pulls off" with only 1/8 twist. Prickly plastic barb on the lid. Cheap flip lid with plastic "molded in" hinge and lock. B007RTXJHS Trudeau Maison Journey: Fit was OK and I was pleased with the sealing mechanism, but decided the handle got in the way and wasn't suited for this purpose. B077FZ5CZC Rubbermaid: Flip lid similar to Lasting Coffee, a little fat for my handlebar holder. B07J1J6JTM MIRA: Very similar to Lasting Coffee, too skinny -- was concerned it would slip through one of my handlebar holders B081TK4C72 Farberware: Way too fat to fit. Described as a screw-on lid but was actually a press-on lid. The bicycle handlebar holders I'm using include an "industry standard" PDW Bar-ista drink holder (B003Z80J6E), a generic aluminum ring-style similar to the PDW, and the Delta Cycle holder which is narrower, and more similar to a water bottle cage with a silicone band pulling the two wings of the cage towards each other. The threaded-on lid takes a full turn to secure. The primary seal is a molded silicone skirt style seal that expands out to meet the inside of the mug (well, actually, it's slightly oversized and reduces in to follow the contour of the wall). The seal is removable for washing. The flip-lid pivots on a stainless steel, sprung hinge, and the trigger to open it also pivots on a sprung hinge and does not rely on bending plastic to latch / unlatch. The mouthpiece seat is stupid-simple squishy rubbery plug that just stops up the large drink hole, very similar to a baby pacifier. And then there's the lid lock, which is just extra protection against the lid flipping open. Two unappreciated features are the flip-lid has a detent so that, if it's pushed open all the way, it stays put and doesn't wiggle around, and the drink spout is great for controlled pouring into a proper ceramic coffee mug. Measurements: This mug starts at 68mm diameter at the base. It steadily tapers up to 76mm, before widening to the final 82mm diameter at the widest part. The mug portion without lid is 171mm tall. This works well to keep my coffee hot, and it doesn't drip when held upside down. Cleaning is very easy as all parts that are normally exposed to the drink are exposed. There are no hidden mechanisms like on my Contigo travel mugs or the Thermos mug I mentioned above. Lastly, I was unfamiliar with the Zojirushi name when I purchased this mug, but I came to learn (from product literature and further reading online) that it's a reputable company that's been manufacturing vacuum insulated containers since 1948, headquartered in Japan with manufacturing in Thailand. That helps to explain why the material quality is so high compared to the others (hinges and seals), but also why it was the second costliest travel mug of the seven.

Great Mug
I didn't see any reviews so I thought I would add one. If you're interested in this model the SM-YAE48, I'm guessing you've had good experience with one of the previous models. I have use the older model SM-KHE48 (slicksteel version) for about 3 years and have loved it. The last update of this mug added a teflon coating so I didn't buy it. This new one does not have any coating - just the polished "slicksteel". It's a little different design, where the lid does not come apart. It's one piece, only the rubber gasket seal on bottom and rubber stopper in the flip cap come out. The older version came apart which made it easy to clean. In spite of not being able to take apart this version, there doesn't seem to be areas that will be difficult to clean. This lid sits in the thermos, the older version screwed on top of it. The one part I don't like in this and the previous versions is that there is an indentation on the very bottom inside that seems to attract stains along the edges after awhile. Would be better if the bottom were smooth. Overall, it's wider and more stout than previous versions - it fits in the cup holder better on my vehicle. Keeps coffee hot all day, doesn't spill - lid has a pretty bullet proof lock. The lid opens all the way back (further that 180 degrees) so the stopper never hits you in the nose while drinking and you can still see while driving. Great mug - $20 better than the previous version? ...probably not, unless having your mug not rattle around in your cupholder is all that important to you. The older one's run around $30... so if this drops to maybe around $40 it would be a nice upgrade. Overall great mug though.

Beautiful with some trade offs
This travel cup is very nice. It does not maintain temperature as long as the original shape/size Zojirushi travel cups, but this could be a good thing Those hold face burning temp for a very long time. This might work better for a daily traveler, and even if it does not hold temp as long, it will hold it for hours. The wider mouth is easier to pour into. It is a bit shorter and has the slick steel (no non-stick coating). I own both and both bottles clean easily. I like the wider mouth for cleaning purposes, but the top is a different matter. It does not come apart for cleaning like the other and if it is filled a drop over the fill line it will leak down your front through the top-opening button. I will stick with the other style in the future, but others may find this one more to their liking.

The worlds best travel mug? It may well be just that.
After tiring of what has to be one of the largest collections of coffee travel mugs, upwards of two dozen, that all have their flaws, I decided to purchase this one mainly in the hopes that it will not leak. It has not disappointed in any way. It is very well made stainless steel inside and out being polished inside. The screw on lid is black abs plastic with a stainless steel button which is depressed after sliding the lock to open. Two silicone seals, one on the bottom of the lid that seals the mug body and the other that seals off the drinking opening totally contain all liquid. After drinking, closing the lid creates a vacuum through the top seal. Fit and finish are impeccable with no sharp edges. Hot liquids stay hot for more than eight hours. I used 190 degree water from my Keurig and checked it every hour with a candy thermometer. After eight hours, which is a normal shift at work for me, it was still at 145 degrees. A very drinkable temperature. If anything negative even remotely can be stated, it may hold temperature too long for some people. If this is the case for you, I would just leave the lid open if possible. If rated on a one to ten scale, it gets a ten from me. It never leaks and it holds temperature. Plus it looks great too. I cannot envision a scenario where this will not please even the most scrutinizing consumer, of which I consider myself to be.

Good closure, but thermal leakage rather high.
I bought this to replace a thermos element5 travel mug that I've had for years. I wanted something that would sit in a cup holder (the e-5 doesn't), be completely leakproof, and hold heat well. The closure and seal on the zojirushi are excellent. Easy to use one-handed, excellent sealing, and the drinking edge is well shaped to keep you from wearing your coffee. The whole mug is nicely made but the construction does not feel robust. I can flex the outer walls of the mug with my hand. I will admit that I'm comparing this to the e5, but it's lightly constructed. The real failing is in heat holding. The ZJ just doesn't hold heat as well as the e5 or some other travel mugs I've had over the while. From what I can see, the larger screw top allows more heat to escape that does a smaller diameter top. Since the top is not insulated, it gets warm anywhere the contents touch it. Heat leak. Larger top=larger thermal leak. I'll certainly keep it, but it's not suitable for me for everyday use.

Great Travel Mug
This is the only travel mug that you will ever need!. It is actually the second one that I have purchased. The first was smaller and I still use it for a second beverage or soup. The reason this traveler is so great is that hot beverages stay hot for a minimum of 6 hours. In fact, I found that I have to water down my coffee a bit to cool it if I am going to drink it sooner than this. Leaving the lid open during that time cools it only a little. Beverages will still be warm at 10 hours later. It is also great for cool beverages. If there is ice in your beverage, it will still be there at 6 hours. To be fair, the ice will have melted a bit, which waters down the drink. I travel a lot and have tested out many mugs. This one definitely keeps liquid the hottest for the longest. This mug almost never leaks. I say almost, because it needs to have a dry seal in order for it not to leak. It is easy enough to wipe down the rim of the mug before attaching the lid, though. My first mug hasn't leaked after 1.5 years and I'm expecting a minimum of 1.5 years for this one as well. I will note that I am very conscientious about not washing it in the dishwasher, which is not recommended. I believe that it may wear down the seals faster. This travel mug also has a lock on it, which is great so that the lid does not accidentally pop open (as if you meant to drink from it). This lock alone is a genius idea. It is the reason I can toss it in my bag and go. All in all, this mug definitely is worth it.

Expectiations fully met.
I always read product reviews from multiple sources, often in English plus whichever country the product is from or the market it's designed for. Generally speaking, I enjoy purchasing Japanese products because from my personal experience, their marketing-specification-manual instructions reflect the product's capability to satisfy its intended consumer. The Zojirushi SM-YAE48 is from Japan (made in Thailand), but the series is not (yet) available on Zojirushi's Asian countries websites. This fact led me to believe that this travel mug is designed for American consumers first and foremost. It is however, just now available on Amazon Japan for a whopping $125 without reviews so far. From the low ratings across all 4 colors given by Amazon reviews here, I decided to test the product myself and see whether or not the reported leaking problem holds true for such a beautiful mug. Long story short, the unit I received never leaked left either sideways or upside down, in both hot and cool water. Having thoroughly read through the manual in both English and Chinese (they reveal different info!), I can confirm that this mug can be washed (unlike some other Zojirushi vacuum bottles that are advised to be unwashable!), and when properly loaded, it should be leak-proof. Although the manual does state that when placing this mug in your bag/purse to leave it upright to prevent leakage, based on my short-term test, I see no likelihood why I can't use this mug like a Nalgene bottle. :-) The green color is so peaceful to look at, I would describe it as Apple Green on the lid and Metallic Lime Green on the stainless body. The size is just perfect for me, at 16 oz.-just under 1/2 liter, this mug holds enough water to last me through an entire workday. The diameter tapers towards base, making it a secure fit in my car drink holders; it also feels substantial (luxurious & light). The locking lid works effortless and the lid cover swings into a notched position to prevent swinging back down while drinking. Compared to all other drinking mugs from Zojirushi to date, this mug finally addresses the location of the push button, making it level to the lid edge so that my lower lip or chin will not come in contact. Finally, a fully loaded mug with boiling water remained warm 12 hours after I locked the lid. However, I felt the sport series bottles probably maintained better insulation than this model. This is fine for me as it's designed to be consumed straight out of the mug rather than pouring into a cup. My reason for deducting one-star is a bit unfair: the lid mechanism employs a thin-gauge tension spring to pop open. From my past experience with this type of spring, they eventually break off (especially with the moisture/temperatures associated with a vacuum bottle) and disables the product's usefulness. Of course, the manual did also state that the lid components are consumable and may need to be replaced in the future at the owner's expense. To sum up, I'm very happy to be accompanied by this beautiful Zojirushi travel mug 24 hours a day, anywhere I go (including camping!). This Japanese product has once more proven to me that when they advertise it, they deliver it! Cheers!
