The back has a caveat great for placing pencil, pen holders, and miscellaneous desktop items. Although small, it is spacious and is great for utility. Review: Sturdy Work Desk - I purchased this table because I wanted a space to work on scrapping projects. The area I'm using is small so this desk works perfectly. The desk was relatively easy to put together with an Allen wrench, included, and a flat tip and Phillips head screw driver. No written directions were included only picture tutorial. I failed to look at all the pictures of this product because there is a 3in gap at the back of the desk so the entire desk top is not usable solid work space. Not really a deal breaker though I placed some pencil holders and turned it into a supply storage area. I just wish Ikea was closer to where I live so I could've drove to the store and saved money on shipping. Not the easiest to put together, but about the typical time you would assume it would take to put a desk together. The back has a slit so you can put cords through and a little "shelf" to put a surge protector on (or anything else you want). We had a particularly unusable space under a window that took up valuable real estate in a tiny rental suite we had. W looked high and low locally for a small desk that could fit into both width wise and depth wise so that it would be flush with the neighbouring wall. Not an easy task. The local options were mostly junk and simply didn't fit the space. We then found this little gem online, measured three times and crossed our fingers. Once it arrived we were impressed by how sturdy the little thing was once built and the finish looked great as well. Low and behold it fit. Perfectly. Have used it daily for a few months now and really like it. Only beef is that the open channel at the back (being full width) really limits how far back you can set your monitor.
