Fantastic Sequel!
This was a truly wonderful sequel in a fantastic series! Overall, it reminds me of The Chronicles of Loresse by Melissa Bitter, only better! I loved The Artful Apprentice--it goes up with The School of Hard Knocks and Trial by Fire as my favorite books in the series! Emily is coming into her own as a sorceress, and has to balance learning magic with keeping her own integrity--all while studying advanced magic in a medieval like world with Kings and Renaissance like politics. My only question is shouldn't Emily have thought about the consequences of how Void might respond when he finds out what Emily did in 10 or 12 years? Void will still be a far more powerful, deadly sorcerer! Still, overall, a great book!

Like a speed bump in a busy road
So if you’re like me and you’ve been reading this series for the past 18 books you’ve liked it. Every book so far has actually gotten a five star review from me. The books followed someone of a pattern initially there was a book about school and learning more magic was developed in introduced into the series and then the following book was an adventure. We saw that several times in the Siri throughout Emily’s years atWhitehall. We got to know the world we got to see some villains introduced to some interesting characters that was all great. Now she’s beginning to mature and come to her on as an adult she has her on University and she starts her apprenticeship. Not for many of us we have been waiting on this moment what is she going to learn What a whore apprenticeship look like what task if any will she be assigned. No this was a great story but it fell flat to be honest. I didn’t get anything out of the apprenticeship that made me go wow OK that’s cool that’s great. Now the latter portion of the book is a mystery quite literally a mystery. To be honest I somewhat saw the ending it wasn’t a great mystery if you think about it. Even if you don’t think about it when you get to the end it’s not going to change you or the story really. This book is almost like a speed bump it does nothing for me it just slows me down and really makes me wonder what’s coming next.We are literally approaching 20 books in the series now and I think it is worth bringing up the fact that I want to know who is this mean villain here. We’ve seen them in previous epilogues of other books not saying they appear in this epilogue but who is working behind the scenes here as the truly truly bad guy I want to know that now or at least I want to be shown more of that now.

Possibly the best in the series
Emily is back in school, with Void, finally apprenticed with him as her master. But now it's one on one, and though not cruel, Void is a hard taskmaster. And Emily's mind and skills are expanding. And there are tests! But Emily has a few surprises of her own as possibly the greatest, most powerful sorcerer of the age works to teach her how to REALLY do magic! Then comes a big test, sink or swim in the real world. It's a test with no instructions. Figure out what Void expects her to do, and "take care of it." There is a whodunit, mighty deeds, traitors, and a surprising application of "The cold equations" Starts slow, but hard to put down, and the big test is a nail biter. There are lots of references to recent stories in the series, and some plot elements depend on major and minor plot issues that have gone before. Nuttall didn't cheat. Everything in this story has been mentioned before, so the deus ex machina is really not, sort of! And a promise of at least another soon! This series is definitely among Nuttall's best. Absolutely not a knockoff of Harry Potter, but what that series could have been, if not locked into magical imagery for early teens. Emily is a very real person, growing into her skills as well as becoming an adult. Now in graduate school at the highest level.

Apprentice's Guide to Dragon taming - DON'T
Emily is Back, with the interdimensional spider thingy gone, her magic restored, her friend's kingdom saved its time to actually learn new things and expand her horizons as Void's Apprentice. She also gets to visit the kingdom of Dragora full of Dragons! Well, supposedly, once upon a time... now its full of dragon statues, dragon paintings, dragon banners, dragon titles and lots of warring politicians (not dragons). Emily has a task to perform.. only she isn't told what it is... teachers gotta love them.... So being thrown at the deep end of a political crisis with a dead King, warring factions its swim or be eaten by a dragon (literally this time) for our heroine..Overall its another good entry to the series that will leave you wanting more.

Reaching New Heights
I thought this was a phenomenal book. I adored the author's steady reveal of the true heights of magical power, the new settings, the few new characters, and the practical developments in Emily's character. The developments in Emily's character in particular have been a long time coming, and foreshadowed over the past few books as she takes more steps towards becoming a stronger, more adult, person after leaving Whitehall. The new settings introduced were extremely interesting, bringing new depth to the entire world and expanding the reader's understanding of the world at the same rate of Emily's. And the new characters, while relatively few in number, had a potential depth to them and allowed a glimpse of the future as more of the older character start to fade from view. The novel itself was divided into two sections. The first was a schooling portion. The second was more of a mystery. Both worked extremely well, and the transition was extremely smooth. I also liked the ending, which I felt was finally moving towards a big conclusion with some of the shadowy forces that had been tailing Emily for most of the series. And for any who have no yet read any part of this extremely long series, I would say that it is extremely worth your time. There have been a couple slower books throughout, but the overall series has incredible, and I am always looking forward to the next one.

2 stories in 1 but does it work?
I love the SIM series, it's characters, it's ever developing and expanding storyline, and it's twists, so I was looking forward to this with great anticipation. The book has almost been written in two halves the first half covering Emily's training and interactions with Void is great, the level of detail CN goes into as to how the world of magic works is fascinating and the new locations and storylines touched upon opened up the SIM world even more, I'd have been more than happy if the book had gone on about her training. The second half feels far more like a story on its own and one which you might feel you've read before in the SIM universe. It was hard to get invested in the characters and storyline because there was no real context as to why they were important, yes there is of course a twist at the end which brings the whole book back together, but it didn't quite fit as well as it could have.By any standards its still a good book and good addition to the SIM world, but if it had kept the storyline of the first half going it could have been even better.

Great story
Well what can i say , I love this series as i do with all Christopher G Nuttall's novels. If you haven't read any of his series why not you dont know what you missing, He has great likable characters who you want to get to know better by reading more books so buy them all and binge read and at the pace he writes there will probably be another not far in the future.

Another great addition to a wonderful series
No spoilers for the plot but this takes off exactly where the last book finished and moves at a nice pace. I really like the world Mr Nuttall has created and am looking forward to the next instalment. Would defiantly suggest you do not star with this book, but its good as a standalone, but go back to the beginning and read them all, you will not be disappointed.

Great new volume in the series
I love this series. The world that that author has created is rich and full of detail and, whilst I do occasionally feel as if Emily is a little too holier-than-thou and that she’s wrought a little too much change to her new environment, the characterisations within these books are just fabulous. This book is no exception. I’ve been eagerly looking forward to Emily’s apprenticeship with Void, and thus far it hasn’t disappointed! Really looking forward to seeing how Emily develops during upcoming volumes in this brilliant series.Bravo!

Still engaging after all this time
It is rare for a series to keep me interested for this long, let alone chomp at the bit for just one more. This series has managed the whole way through to keep me interested in the world, the characters and the battle to keep sane when power can come easily. Both social commentary and psychology are ripe for plot and character jeopardy which keeps it fresh and current.I am definitely a fan, a hard bought one, but Christopher makes it easy by writing good reads on a regular cadence. Keep up the good work!
