Good product. Excellent customer service.
As has been my experience with other Taylor products, this is a solidly constructed dial thermometer. The dial measures 2 3/4" in diameter and provides easy to see readings in the range of 120°F to 212°F. The thermometer is pretty well-sealed and I have no instances where water leaked into the thermometer while it was being cleaned.I've used this primarily for oven-cooked meat dishes and the temperature readings have been pretty much on the mark. Note that proper placement of this thermometer into an appropriate spot is the key to reliable readings.Although it was a nice feature while it lasted, the red metal pointer quickly fell off and was never to be seen again. Outside of that minor setback, the thermometer performed admirably and accurately for almost a year. Recently though, the needle started spinning as the dial was rotated and had no correlation to the temperature it was supposed to measure. The silver lining to the mechanical breakdown, and the reason why I rate this thermometer so highly, is Taylor's customer service. I sent Taylor's customer service an e-mail describing the problem and asking about their warranty process. Their reply was to ask for my mailing address so they could send me a replacement and to ask that I throw away the defective thermometer.I can confidently recommend this Taylor product with four stars based on this great customer support, my prompt receipt of the replacement thermometer, and the consistent performance from this product.

CANNOT WASH. In fact, NO Taylor leave-in thermometer can be! BEWARE!
Well, I love the giant dial and clear markings. But one quick rinse to get the oil that naturally spatters up onto it, while making my first roast, broke it. Water got into the mechanism as this is NOT DISHWASHER SAFE. Not even rinse-safe. So if you plan to rinse clean your thermometer, consider the other Taylor model 5947 which IS DISHWASHER SAFE.NOTE THE DESCRIPTION FORM AMAZON IS INCORRECT--IT IS NOT DISHWASHER SAFE according to the Taylor website itself. Here are ALL the features they list:5939N Classic Meat ThermometerFeaturesLarge, easy-to-read 2 3/4" dial.Range 120°F to 212°F.Preparation scale for various meats printed on dial.Red pointer.Glass lens.Adjustable temperature indicator.Stainless steel 4 1/2" stem.10/16/12UPDATE! THE ABOVE IS ALSO INCORRECT: Taylor made a mistake on their own website. Turns out NONE of their thermometers that you can leave in the oven are water-proof, dishwasher safe or can even be rinsed in water. So BEWARE!

Other negative reviews are based on confusion over how to read device
This thermometer worked perfectly the first time I used it - stuck in a thick meatloaf while it cooked in the oven.Other reviews mention the device reading wrong sitting on the counter or similar, but these are because buyers are confused by the needle, made worse by an incorrect answer to one of the questions - the long end of the needle is the correct end for reading the thermometer and points down to the right at room temperature. Since the scale starts at 120 degrees F, 70 degrees F is going to be way below that starting point. When someone states it reads about 140 degrees sitting on the counter, that's where the short end of the needle points, which is the wrong end of the needle. Many other reviewers were similarly confused by thinking the short end is the right end.I have another cheaper thermometer with a much wider range that I always felt was off by about 10 degrees F because it reads 60 degrees at room temperature. When both were placed in hot water, the cheap one read 135 degrees when this new one read 145 degrees.I would highly recommend this thermometer, but be sure to read the correct end of the needle!

Taylor Quality
I finally broke my 60+ year old Taylor meat thermometer. I haven't used this new meat thermometer yet. But the larger diameter is much easier to see. Great for Turkey and larger Roasts. It may be a little to large for London Broil, and small diameter pork roasts. You can't beat Taylor quality.

NO easily read
I test this device several times. one of those test was checking the readings against water warming at different temperatures and using a mercurial thermometer, there is at least -10 degrees of difference (when meat is been cooked that is a significant difference). It is not waterproof then it has to be washed very carefully, which in a working kitchen it is not a very common chance to take; but the worse problem in my opinion is it does not have a clear arrow signaling what side of the arrow is the one that points at the temperature. I do not recommend it. I am not sending it back because it is not worth it the annoyance. I expected more from a Taylor thermometer, even in a cheap one.

It measures temperature.
Well I bought this to make cooking safer and to make sure that some of the meals I had in mind didn't end up raw. It was actually more of a safety thing. I asked myself "should I eat this?" "is this safe for human consumption?" or "is this best left to my dog?" The reality is that this thing saved my life. If I had only known that my stove lied to me about its duration of cooking and that it was trying to serve me chicken that was barely dead. Alas there came Taylor, I was once again versed in proper temperature. Once again I felt comfortable in consuming cow and fowl. I could cook a burger may it be beef or turkey and know that I was within regulation.I thank you Taylor for making a supreme device that makes cooking so much greater!!!!!!!And if you think is too drawn up I have been using this for over a year and I have yet to get salmonella.
