Yes. That's what I bought it for. My Wii u game pad. My dog ate the original

Q: can this be plugged into the game pad to charge it?

Yes, you can plug it into the gamepad to charge it.... but be advised the cord is cheap. The one I bought started shorting out and died within a few months. It wasn't abused, my system is adult owned. I recommend spending more and buying the real Nintendo cord. If money is tight and you need a cord now, its worth taking a chance I guess, there are lots of good reviews for it. I hope that helps :)

It seemed to me to be a generic one. This didn't last me 3 months before it broke.

This charger is for the Wii U gamepad. It sucks, don’t buy it. Mine stopped working after only a couple of weeks.
