Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Family Safe in a Crisis Review: Informative and Very Useful! - This book is fabulous and practical for a family who wants to both learn how to store food for emergencies and how to cook more economically while maintaining nutrition and taste. There is a wonderful section with recipes on how to use dehydrated food to make soups and casseroles. I puchased the $49 vegetable sampler pack from Hamrnony House Foods through desertcart.com and tried Layton's recipe for Chicken Noodle soup. It went in the pot in less than 5 minutes, cooked in 25, and was fabulous! My kids loved and ate it up. It was made with all dehydrated foods so I can see myself having all the ingredients on hand for any quick meal I need, even in a power outage or other emergency situations. This book has opened a whole new world for me--the use of dehydrated vegetables! Layton will remind you of all the things you will want to store for emergencies. She focuses on water storage and purification, simple gardening, stock-piling food and other supplies, and best of all, how to effectively use your storage in everyday life so that nothing goes to waste and so that emergency situations aren't so painful. The best part of the book, in my opinion is the recipes. They make up half the book. They are easy, economical and so far, very tasty! I would say her methods are good for any family even if you are not anticipating emergencies. A great book for beginner economists. Review: Book Delivers 100% - A no nonsense guide that actually delivers fully on its promise by giving you all the how-to info on how to keep your family safe, fed and hydrated, and as comfortable as possible in a crisis. No words are minced or wasted in this invaluable guide, everything from checklists of the necessities you will need to recipes for using foods that hold up to long term storage. How to set up a long term water supply, how to make an emergency use toilet that you can use for as long as you have too. Collecting proper containers for different uses that are covered in the book. I could go on and on explaining how cool this book is but I want this review to be more concise and not drag on and on . So I guess the best way I can explain this book in short words is to say it contains much more info than just food and water storage, it contains all the things to be prepared and have at your finger tips , things that you would never realize you needed until a crisis presented itself, it does this as inexpensively as possible ,lots of common sense here. (like how to make a serviceable toilet). Pure practical, must have day to day needs to will wish you had but probably would never think of until a super crisis hit and suddenly there was the need for something basic and immensely important staring you in the face. The book preps us for that so we can be well prepared and better safe than sorry. If you purchase no other guide for keeping your family safe in a crisis, get this one.

Best book for stocking an emergency pantry.
This is the perfect book for everyone who wants an emergency stash of food for emergencies. I grew up in a home that had a well stocked pantry but this book has helped me take my food store to another level. It covers everything from what to stock, how to store it, and shelf life of individual items.

A great mix...
Anyone can buy a case of MRE's an say they are prepared for an emergency. What happens when those MRE's expire? This book provides plan to make preparedness an easily managed day-to-day activity. It is extremely applicable to a wide range of readers. Everyone from the hard-core survivalist concerned about communist or alien invasion to the factory worker concerned about the security of their job could learn something from this book. I fall into the middle between these two extremes. The most valuable part of this book is the development of an at-home "supermarket". The essence of this plan is to buy what you use regularly in higher quantities, and begin a first-in first-out rotation of the products you buy. When times get lean start to use up the supplies that you have stockpiled. It sounds simple in theory, but this book really helps define the nitty-gritty of the practice of such a storage plan. There are other sections of this book regarding long term storage of grains and legumes that was less important to me, but some readers may find valuable. Also, a list of recipes using the staples stored is presented and some lists of non-food items that would help in a disaster situation are presented. The main takeaway from this book is the implementation of a rotation system to buy what is commonly used and methods for long-term storage of foodstuffs. This book is highly recommended.

Excellent resource!
This book is an excellent resource for preparing for disasters. Two other things I like are that it doesn't go into long explanations on how to prepare, and the print is large enough so it makes it easy to read. The information is relevant and easy to follow. And one of the best features, that I didn't realize was part of the book, is the list of recipes that are provided. So not only do you get a list of foods that can be stored but you get recipes on how to cook/prepare them as well.

Good Basic Book as a starting point
I purchased this book along with the SAS survival handbook by Wiseman, and I have to say the SAS handbook was better and more comprehensive, because the SAS book covered how to get food in the wild. But there were quite a few tips in this book that I thought made purchasing it worthwhile, and the price is less than $20, which I felt was reasonable for the information given. The author gives lots of ideas for how to cheaply increase food storage space in your home, like under your bed, and how to make or buy inexpensive shelving for large amounts of canned goods. The inventory planning chart was mostly filler pages and something I could have done with a wire-bound notebook. The checklists were good-- the author basically has long lists of all the items you should have in your home at all times.

A nice list of foods for storage in case of emergency. It also includes: water storage, recipes for stored foods, emergency 72 hour kits, first aid kits, inventory planning, sprouting seeds, short term and long term emergencies and more.

If you are just starting out on the Prep. band wagon then this book will cover, in detail, most of what you want to know. It is not full to the gills with information but it runs close. It allows you to help yourselves by using this book as a tool rather than a coffee table read. If you could get it in hardback then that would be better still. The book at the rear has hints and recipies for the stuff you will need to cook with. It has lists galore that you add to, so to keep it clean you will soon be transfering the details over to a spreadsheet on the pc to simplify things. It covers most things you need to get moving. It wont cover farming, as it is not that kind of book. The idea is to set you up for the long term haul. The author, Peggy Layton, is from the US, and it is so much easier for those across the pond to do as she is suggesting. Here in the UK we have to do our homework for those suplies that she is reommending. But not impossable, and now much easier to do with this book. In a nutshell its about storage of the foods and liquids, and how to go about keeping them stable. It covers a simple 72 hr kit bag too. It does not cover all things, like how to cook using a dutch oven in full, but even it tells you that cooking in one of those is an art in itself, and for that you need to buy a book to do it justice. So the book has its limitations, but you are lft knowing what they are and where to go from here. Get it. Worth evey penny. Tom.
