There should be some air flow across the unit and you could always cut a couple of slits in behind where the potentiometer is sticking out. The aluminum heat syncs are ample size and the only thing I’ve noticed is radiant heat similar to other electronic devices enclosed. I’ve had no problems with two of these units and both are enclosed. But err on the side of caution always, air flow holes / slits do wonders . It looks like if you don't like the position of the knob, you can unsolder the pot, and use the header to run a cable to an external pot. **Q: Write up states "allows controlling direction of a dc motor". is this correct? does it allow variable pwm current control of the motor ccw & cw?** A: it will control the speed of a dc motor within the specified voltage range. It will not reverse the direction of the motor **Q: Is this a discrete controller or continuous?** A: Question doesn't make sense. PWM by definition is a continuous wave where the duty cycle can vary. Almost all of these type devices pump out a square wave. It can be 'rounded' some by putting a capacitor across the output (ie, a filter) - the final shape to be determined by current draw and capacitor size. In hardware discrete is often 'digital.' To some a square wave looks 'digital', but, PWM is not discrete and the wave is actually generated with analog electronics, not digital (in this device).
