methinks tis watered down
If you know almost nothing about single malts, this book might be helpful - but I would advise getting a book that gives you some more information, and goes into some depth as well as critical information concerning distilleries, independent bottlers, etc. - Malt Whisky Yearbook, Micheal Jackson (although the new stuff is actual written by other "experts"), Jim Murray, etc. the biginners guide to malt whisky on the website maltmadness.com is a great place to start - also gives you info on further reading.

READ THIS FIRST! Collins Guide to Malt Whiskies of Scotland
This is an excellent little guide, pocket (and therefore bite)-sized, covering all of the single malt whiskys worth knowing about. It would be very easy for the author Dominic Roskrow to lapse into the same style of pretentious and over-bearing waffle that means my single copy of Hugh Johnson's Wine Guide has ended up discarded, never to be replaced - but he does not.The writing is accessible; there is just enough distillery history, tasting notes and release information and about each expression that makes you want to try each malt in order to draw your own conclusions.Take the section on Ardbeg for example - 2 pages of tasting notes, with photos of the best expressions and complete with images of the distillery. Roskrow is also quite direct about the malts whose reputations have suffered over time due to their use in mainstream blends (curse you, Johnny Walker). He is not afraid either of recommending 25 y.o. releases as budget and cost does not come into this guide - that is for you and me as buyers to decide. This has helped me greatly in my first forays into the single malt world and as a result I have purchased many single malts and am currently building up a reasonable cabinet with wide variety. Thus - thanks to this little guide - I am now wiser and more knowledgeable, and you won't regret picking it up for the snip of a price you'll pay for it on Amazon.com.
