Do i need to buy the two cartridges with the printer for the printer to work upon receiving it?

The printer should come with one of each, CF217A (Toner Cartridge) and CF219A (Image Drum). The yield on the CF217A is 1600 Pages and CF219A yield is 12,000 pages. So you would need to replace them at different intervals

Supposed to be new - but no orange tab. I think think it may be recycled. How to check?

If the box was unopened, it's almost certainly a new cartridge (a recycler would need to go to a lot of trouble to not only refill the cartridge but also fake the box. There is a QR code on the box that you can scan to verify that it's real, as well as a small "image shifting" sticker on the box end.

Do i need to worry about "toner drums" and "cartridges?? isn't it all "one item"?? trying to find a simply copy machine. sheese....\

This is only the toner. The drum is HP 19A. For a model which has an all-in-one toner/drum I would look towards the LaserJet 200 or 400 series.

Printer software? Where?

This is toner cartridge only. Software at HP website or DVD in printer carton.
