I’m a physicist who spent over ten years developing high-speed magnetically levitated flywheels. I just needed a marked color magnet so bought this kit for next day delivery. I noticed that someone had trouble levitating the spindle because a rubber band was missing (any small rubber band will work). But another thing to be aware of is that the 4 stationary magnets may not stay fixed in the base (with pole orientation all pointing the same direction). Slipping a couple sheets of paper when the magnets are pressed into the base will help tightly secure them (see photo). And the magnets need to all be pressed all the way down, at the same height. Also, playing around with the axial orientation of the magnets on the rotating spindle makes a big difference in the stability of the unit (rotor spindle magnets need to also point the same direction as base). I like teaching physics and think this is a fun little package for children to explore, and recommend it. An interesting “thought experiment” is to visualize the magnetic flux field lines (think of the orientation of the iron filings by the bar magnets). This helps to understand how the spindle stays levitated (by imagining the field lines); and why the spindle is only stable with one point fixed (the pin-spindle interface). Otherwise, the stationary magnetic suspension here is unstable.

Got this for a science kit and it worked just as needed. All the magnets worked and the students thought it was so cool. It was easy to use and fun for the kids to play around with. There are a good variety of magnets, a good value for the money and can be used for a range of experiment/uses. Only down side is there is a lot of little pieces...as to be expected.
