    Great Little Ep

*by A***N on Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2010*

************************Personnel * Robert Calvert - vocals * Dave Brock - guitar, keyboards, vocals * Alan Davey - bass guitar, vocals * Richard Chadwick - drums * Simon House - violin track 3 * Arthur Brown - vocals track 3Although Robert Calvert died in 1988, Brock unearthed some unused vocals and a short spoken word piece and inserted them into 2 of the 5 tracks on this disc.*************************Technical StuffThe recording, mixing, and mastering on this one is top notch. And despite it being a rock/techno release, there isn't a hint of the 'loudness war' on this disc. Kudos.*************************The Music and VideoThis is more of an ep than a full release. This is also a dualdisc which means they put a dvd on the opposite side of the cd. This makes the disc thicker, and they have make the pits on the cd side to take into account that the cd lasers will not be able to focus properly. It's kind of a trick they had to use because the cd portion is not redbook standard. This means that it will not play in every cd player, so be warned. Most of the video is preview footage of dvds that were released following this disc's release. I didn't care for the footage that much, but I don't watch too many music dvds anyway. It's not my thing. The music is mostly synth/sequencer/drum machine based, so if you don't like Hawkwind's techno side you should pass on this disc. But if you do, you will really enjoy these songs. They are very innovative, and very catchy; absolutely great electronica. Two of the tracks (2 and 4) are from the "Calvert/Brock" project that was released a couple of years ago. They are excellent tracks, and it is great to hear Calvert's voice again.**************************SummaryEssential for Hawk fans, but not something for newbies.

    Listening not watching

Cd's great, especially ode to a time flower and the 21st century remix of silver machine. I was a little bored with the dvd part though, and was hoping for some better footage, but this is HAWKWIND!

    Excellent on many levels

Once I found a machine to play the Cd side of this dual-sided disc, I was rewarded with some excellent material well engineered and superbly produced. The DVD side also gives me a good insight into some up-coming releases. You might wonder why, despite the low price, you are buying what is essentially a trailer for some forthcoming CD and (4) DVD releases - well there are a few unique pieces (though the 21st Century Silver Machine seems rather unnecessary), a good booklet and the chance to form a meaningful opinion on some forthcoming material, even though I will probably buy it all anyhow.Well worth the investment, even the advert for Hawfest made me smile and look forward to the possibility of Hawkfest 2007
