Some hold the melodica horizontal like a keyboard, even setting it on a hard surface like a table and use the long tube. Some hold it flat and look down the keys while they play. For me, I like the idea of holding it like a wind instrument (which it is) on it's side, sort of like a trumpet (a trumpet style mouthpiece is included). This does make playing less like a keyboard (and so more challenging for a pianist) but is more fun to play and looks cool! This is my first melodica but believe the price, the sound, and build quality make it a great choice. It's generally easy to play but like most instruments will require time to play well. I notice that folks frequently buy a 20.9 inch tube from the Pianica to go with this.** A: 20 inches. I measured from the tip of the mouthpiece to the end of the connector. The end pieces are black, the tube is white. The 20.9 inch Pianica tube doesn't seem like much difference. **Q: Has anyone checked the tuning with a tuner? A recent gig I did had me wanting an upgrade and this one is great. The width of the keys is the same but the white keys are longer than the Hohner which works well with my long fingers. It also projects much better and I could easily get away without using a mic in smaller settings. It is way more robust in terms of build quality than my Hohner and I look forward to the next opportunity to use it performing.
