Review: What a fun book to show how, over time, one's persons differences are not so odd afterall. Great illustrations, engaging and thought provoking. Important for those kids put into a new situation and those welcoming someone different from them. Lovely read at the beginning of the year in a classroom or when any new student arrives. Velvet is odd. All the kids think so. But Velvet doesn't mind that they think that, and she goes on her way, just being herself, and the kids come to learn that different is pretty great after all. I love this book so much. I discovered it years ago, at a little bookstore and brought it home with me, because it resonated as something true and wonderful. I've subsequently given that copy, and many other copies away to kids who follow their own paths. In fact, I bought this copy to replace my copy, which I gave to a girl in my son's class who reminds me very much of Velvet. You know those books that you read, and then you want to hug and hold in your heart forever? This is one of those books. Appropriate for all ages. The art is vivid and bright and happy. The text is short and easy enough for beginning readers, but deep enough for adults. I love this book, and I think every kid (and grownup) who has ever felt like they see the world a little differently will be happy to have this in their collection.

In a subtle, non-didactic way, this book addresses bullying and relational aggression (mean girl bullying). Velvet is "odd" by most kid's standards, but by book's end, the other children learn what makes her "special" instead of "odd." I give this book to every little girl I know. It teaches readers not to judge someone until you get to know them, and that everyone has something special to offer. Most importantly it teaches readers that "odd" is okay; to be proud of exactly who you are.

I think that this was a very cute book that shows you that sometimes being different is a good thing.
