Next I place a couple larger kindling sticks on top, finally a large piece of oak. One match is all it takes to light the end of the fatwood stick, open the damper, shut the wood stove door and walk way. In 10 minutes I have a roaring fire going! The fatwood burns for a longer time than regular kindling, so it really gets flames spreading quickly. No more newspaper to start fires.
