Only the end of it is metal; the upper part is silicone or rubber, which stays on your finger. The holes also prevent sweat from making the thimble move around. It is adjustable, fits my finger best, doesn't fall off, and it also allows for longer nails. It's very comfortable to use. My only problem is finding the one I have. I generally work on several projects at once and it's always with the one I'm not working on. So I'm buying a couple more - VoilΓ  - problem fixed. There are similar open sided thimbles to this that are lined with a silicone layer but it doesn't slide on nicely (since there is silicone), and those just feel thick and awkward. I've even tried those thin bands which are also lined with silicone but my needle always ends up where they are not. Ouch! I've tried the standard metal round thimbles we all grew up with which have never fit and fall off. I never figured out how people used those. Glue maybe? I've tried several leather thimbles which I do like, but they can be a bit thick and I spend more time trying to keep them on my finger than I do sewing. I'm finished searching for and trying out new thimbles. I found one that works great for me. I tried other cheaper ones, but they were not finished as well as the clover.
