Q: Does anyone know what these two extra red pieces that were packed with the projectiles are for? I haven't been able to figure out where they go.

My husband says they are simply extra pieces that were used to hold other pieces in place for packing and shipping.

Q: Appropriate for a Batman granddaughter (turning 4, but with no iPhone), who's nuts about Batman? (I just don't "get" the mechanics/electronics)

Yes it is! My kid's also 4 and there is no complicated mechanics to it, just turns by knobs, no electronics. Great item to have for a Batman Fan!
