Q: dimensions read 5 x 8 yet the scale reads 1.5 inches. which is wrong, the picture or the description?

The scale on my type 27 reads 1.5", the dimensions of the compass are: open 4.25" x 1.5" closed 2.25" x 1.5" 5 x 8 inched would be a HUGE compass the just shy of the size of a half sheet of letter paper (8.5 X 5,5) for comparison

Q: What is the difference between this ("silva mini") and the "silva ranger sl / mini" compass? is "sl" for southern latitudes?

The SILVA Mini and the SILVA Ranger SL, appear to be the same compass. If you go to the Silva website they have a separate listing for USA compasses and compasses for the rest of the world. For the USA market they call it the Mini, for the rest of the world they call it the Ranger SL. My guess is they are using the different names because before about 1997 the Silva compasses sold in the USA and Canada were imported from Silva Sweden company. (Silva Sweden and Silva in USA were actually separate companies). Just after Bjorn Kjellstrom (author of "Be Expert with Map and Compass) passed away, Silva Sweden ended their business relationship with Silva in N. America, which was owned by Johnson Outdoors. After a long court case Johnson Outdoors was granted the right to use the Silva trade name in N. America. They also had the right to use some of the old established compass model names. Between about 1997 till 2018, the Silva compasses sold in N. America were actually Johnson Outdoor products. In 2017 Silva Sweden regained the right to the Silva name in N. America, since then Silva Sweden now owns the right to the Silva name in N. America, and can also now sell their other products. That history I think may account for the use of different names on the compass models, to distinguish their models from the model names used during the 20 years or so that Johnson Outdoors owned the Silva trade name in N. America. btw - After the two companies split, Silva Sweden stamped their products with a stylized all capitals logo, [ ~ SILVA } . Johnson Outdoors compasses logo only used a capital S [ Silva]. You can look up that history on Wikipedia, which appears to be mostly accurate, but not entirely accurate.

No, though I bought my replacement a couple of years ago. At that time, they had not. It's certainly not the great product is was 20 years ago.
