Brilliant book
Brilliant book written in Slater's calm and concise way, there's a method to Nigel's work and every recipe or group of them has a story. Nigel has had an interesting and at times challenging life and this shows in his writing I recommend his books to cooks and even those who would like a good culinary based read.

Good in parts
I have several of Slater's books already. I'd give this 6 out of 10. I feel a cookery book is worth the cost if I would regularly make at least six of the recipes. This fulfils that but with some criticisms. The main criticism is that some of his recipes are not logically set out. I say this as an experienced cook.A good recipe starts with the ingredients and the preparation. So if the eggs need to be separated, that should come at the start with the list of ingredients. If chocolate needs to be chopped, or something ground in a pestle and mortar, it should be stated at the start, not when your cake is mixed and almost ready for the oven. His writing is frankly, waffly and muddled. For me, too many very familiar recipes are included here. For example, fish cakes, apple pie, chocolate brownies and the usual pasta with various sauces. At least a third of the book is given over to bready type of baking ( four days to make your sourdough starter? I think not.) Then there are the biscuits, cakes, pies and puddings. All delicious but only for an occasional treat. One thing I like is that he uses the minimum of ingredients (5 or 6 is perfect!) and most of the food is simple. Depending on your store- cupboard, you may have to stock up on some exotic sauces and herbs. If you like a cookery book that has the feel of a novel about it, you will love it!

This book excites me.
I have to say, I have been excited by this book. I love Nigel Slaters writing style and I own a number of his books which I read, (as one would read a novel), regularly on a Sunday morning as I potter in my kitchen drinking wine and cooking. I more often than not don't really cook from cookery books but I have been so excited by a large number of the recipes in this one that I find I am doing just that! Merely reading the ingredients has me dying to taste the dishes. Thank you Nigel, I think this is the best book I have read in a long time!

I love......
...so much about Nigel Slater and this book is one of them. Any food writer who can start a recipe with "a fabulously messy dish - knives and forks are redundant here" is my sort of food writer. I love the way he gives the ingredients as the title, so simple and so perfect. And the photographs are wonderful, in all their simple "hurry up and eat me" glory. This book arrived two days ago and I have already made three dishes from it, all superb. It will join the other Nigel Slaters on my very large kitchen bookshelf but not yet; at the moment it moves with me from bedside table to kitchen table to sofa-side. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
