These anti-histamines have been around for almost ever. Do they work? Yes, and surprisingly well for me. I have to use an arsenal of products just to have some semblance of a normal day with the way my eyes have become so sensitized to whatever stays in the air here in Sacramento. It used to be a long time ago my eyes only occasionally bothered me a few times during the time of year that everything was blooming. But over the years the watering of my eyes has slowly escalated so that at times I have trouble actually seeing clearly much of the year. Yes, I've seen a number of doctors, including an ophthalmologist. The most they could find was that my eyes had some mild evidence of having been abraded, which didn't surprise me at all, considering how often it's necessary for my to dry my eyes with a soft handkerchief so that I can see my way through my day. The ophthalmologist recommended I use an OTC eye drop formulation to help keep my eyes "wet." The ophthalmologist's explanation was that my eyes were too "dry" and so my body was over-compensating by flooding my eyes with tears. I couldn't believe what she was telling me because it sounded to me like: "Okay, so your car is going too fast, so to fix that you need to speed up!" Really doc? My "excessive tearing" is due to my eyes being too dry? So where do the anti-histamines come in? Well, I found that using generic "Benadryl" combined with generic "Flonase" combined with generic "Olopatadine" eye drops has brought me the closest I've been to have a "normal" day with my eyes. With this routine I occasionally have entire days when my eyes don't run like the bathroom faucet, many days when my eyes only mildly flood with tears, and then a few days when it doesn't seem to make any difference what I do. Compared to using eye drops to "wet" my wet eyes, I'll keep taking the generic anti-histamines. It really saves money over buying any of the name brands!

I have always lived in a region that is quite humid for approximately eight months of the year. All of my adult life I have experienced a runny nose and also what my family doctor called post nasal drip; meaning it was also running down my throat causing a sore throat and also a nasty breath. My family doctor recommmended benedryl as needed. I found immediate relief!! Quite some time ago, I developed a sinus infection in my right front sinus cavity and went to an ENT doctor who prescribed some "horse pills" that I had to chop in half to even swallow. They took care of the infection but the "drip" continued. He tried two other (usually effective) prescriptions which partially worked but also gave me some uncomfortable side affects. When I reported this to him, he pretty much gave me the go-ahead to use the benedryl as needed. There are occasionally a day or two that I don't use them at all but I always have them handy and also keep a bottle of Listerine to alleviate the always prevalent bad breath. I have not had any bad side effects after many years of this OTC item.
