The only substantial negative reviews for the FG20P say it broke in short order. It has a 1 year warranty and apparently very good customer service from Reotemp, so I bought one. It was a replacement for a home made compost probe made with a k-type thermocouple. The k-type is suppsed to be okay in wet applications but it went bizarre after only two days of use (not storing it in the pile, obviously). Compost thermometers are quite expensive so I was trying to avoid buying one. When it became apparent I had to buy one, I got the FG20P as it was the most modestly priced of the thermometers that actually sound like they'll work and hold up to the challenge. It made a night-and-day difference! This thermometer reads accurately and adjusts to temperature changes very quickly (30 degree sweeps in a minute or so are the biggest/fastest I've seen so far). I keep my thermometer in sheltered outdoor storage (I plan to storing it indoors during freezing conditions, though). I would not want to leave even stainless steel in a moist compost pile indefinitely. My pile is no where near thermophillic temperatures, but it's no longer ambient! That's my fault, not the thermometer's, of course. But without data, you can't do anything. This thermometer is giving me great clues as to how active my pile is, both in general and in different layers. I now know I need to work on air flow and nitrogen deficiency. I've only been using it for daily measurements for a week now. But it's worked flawlessly and I hope it will continue to do so. I will post updates if anything changes. Thrilled with it so far, though!

This compost thermometer arrived very quickly and is as described. The packaging included directions on it's use and meanings of the various categories of compost temps. The thermometer is nice and long so it is great for our compost pile. Included in the package were many hints on composting and even a website for those and additional hints. An added bonus: the box itself can be cut up and used in the compost pile (which I did) !! Love that !! One drawback: it takes a few minutes for the thermometer to reach the pile's temp. However, that is expected as it's not digital. I now put the thermometer into our compost pile while I am getting myself organized to add my material to the pile. That system works well..... Good buy !

It's a really good item. Seems accurate and certainly easy to use. Given the length of the shaft you want to be careful when you put it into a compost pile that you don't hit something hard. It's fairly sturdy but it could break. I do wish I had some sort of a case for it so that I could throw it in with my other gardening tools. As it is I'm keeping the original box and while it's a nice sturdy box it's only cardboard so I can't put it with the rest of the tools. One caveat is it's not instant-read like a digital so make sure you leave it in the compost for a minute or so before you decide what the temperature is. I know some people leave their thermometers in the pile all the time. I'm not sure this one is sufficiently weatherproof to do that.
