Q: Can I take plug off to thread cable through hole in kitchen cabinet and then reconnect the plug?

Yes, the plug is removable so you can do as you wish. The only drawback if you require to fix the 2 way plug socket to the wall or the cabinet is the two keyhole shaped holes in the back are not in line. I placed a piece of cardboard over them and skewered through it into the holes to make a template. Line the card up with the top edge of the socket so after drilling the holes its level. Yes, just cut the cable and rewire the plug. I did this just to shorten the length. It is better to do the plug as the socket end could hamper your warranty

Cant think of a reason why not. Ask an electrician.
