Ever since having my first smoked Old Fashioned a couple weeks ago, I've been researching cocktail smoker kits. I already owned a torch, so all I needed was this kit. It came in a nice box, including the 4 different flavored wood shavings, 10 metal screens and a small brush. Some reviews mentioned that the chimney was coated in polyurethane (which would obviously give off a very bad smoke effect), but mine is not. It seems that the company now puts the finish on the product first, THEN drills out the chimney, so there's no finish on the inside of the chimney. The opening is 1" from the top down, but then narrows at the bottom so the screen can rest on the lip on the inside. When I made my first few smoked drinks, I was really impressed at how much smoke the unit created--to the point where it was pouring out the side vents cut in the underside of the smoker, and I was using a very large glass! The unit produced ample smoke with very little effort and using just a small pinch of wood shavings each time. Of course, you have to point the flame of the torch directly down into the chimney and light all the shavings or it won't work. In my case, it worked like a CHARM, and the smoky flavor lingered for a long time after the smoke itself cleared, especially because I had added garnish to the glass before smoking it. It's exactly the effect that I bought this thing for. I've only used the "Whisky Oak" wood shavings so far, but I'm sure that won't matter too much. Bottom line is that this unit is well-made, works great, is half the price of the other one I was considering, and I'm super happy with my purchase. I will be giving this as a gift to all my Bourbon-loving friends until they all have one. Oh, and one other tip: If you're making a smoked Old Fashioned, try using pure maple syrup in place of sugar. Wow, what a drink. I'll need to limit myself to one every 3rd or 4th day--they are THAT good.

If you are making Old Fashioneds you need this! The kit is great as it comes with wood chips to flavor the cocktail. It gives off a good smoke volume, is lightweight so easy to use. Makes a great gift for the bartender in you lufe!

Works well but maybe varnished wood is not the best material for the smoking collar. A Bakelite or Nomex-type liner might be better.

I got this as a gift for my cousin and his girlfriend and they were thrilled. They had seen something like this done at a restaurant. but never tried it before. The kit includes everything you need to smoke a cocktail except the whiskey and a glass. There are 4 different flavored wood chips: apple, hickory, oak and cherry as well as the smoker and a little brush for cleaning. Incredible value for the quality. This makes a unique and thoughtful gift for anyone over 21 years of age. Would be great for a Yankee Swap too.

The wood that the unit is made of smokes even when pointing the torch directly downward onto the wood chips. I’m not sure what type of wood this thing is made out of, but I definitely do not want that flavor in my drink. Disappointed that it cannot be returned. Single use for me, unfortunately. I recommend one that is made of a non-flammable material.

This works great. Easy to use and gets plenty of smoky flavor into your cocktail.
