It is all metal & plastic. I can see it being water resistant outside of the water, but possibly not while swimming. Hope that helps! **Q: Is it easy to subtract a single number while counting?** A: No. Only counts in the positive direction. Cannot subtract. **Q: This might be a stupid question, does the clicker start at 0000? In thee pictures it looks like it starts at 9999 and subtracts down.** A: When you turn the reset dial, the digits rotate, starting with the first (right) digit, then the second digit, etc... At some point, all four digits will be the same. As you continue turning, the four digits will rotate together as 1111, 2222,....., 8888, 9999, then 0000. This is one of their favorite ones to use and count things like red cars, or signs on the highway. Keeps them busy and quiet for a long time in the car if you don't mind the clicking. The clicking sound is very satisfying and it's very easy to reset. They have counted accurately each time we've used them over the past year.
