Interesting edition of a classic
My first Allende book was Eva Luna which started my love for this passionate and thoughtful writer. I love reading her books both in Spanish and in English as a way to kind of get back on the saddle when it comes to my language skills. While I read Eva Luna in the translated English, I've read Paula in the original Spanish and loved each of those books but I'm not sure about this edition. Before picking up the books I was subject to rave reviews from friends and acquaintances telling me that if I loved Allende's books in the past, I would absolutely love this book. Now, I'm not sure if it was the Spanish translation, as I found it very hard to get into at first but it definitely was a challenge for me and I would say to read it in the language you feel most comfortable with. The important part is to feel and understand the story not to refresh your skills! Other than the rocky start the book really starts to pick up around the middle and especially towards the end. The last few chapters were so absorbing it was a shame that the book ended and there wasn't more to go on! I love the way that Allende gets you inside each of the character's head and I found myself second guessing my sympathies and allegiances. As another commenter noted, the strong female roles in the book really showcase Allende's signature style and, like always you can really see a lot of the author in this book about Chile, family, politics, and history. I wholeheartedly recommend this book although the digital version has some annoying typos which are a little distracting!

. EN version The story revolves around the lives of three generations of the well-positioned Del Valle family for 50 years living a magical reality intertwined with the historical-political events within the country until it culminated in the coup in Chile. The story reflects on the errors that are repeated in generations and the author gives us the clue by repeating the name of the four female characters in the story in different synonyms: Nívea, Clara, Blanca and Alba; the latter being the link that can end it.

"La casa de los espíritus" (year 1982) by Isabel Allende is as wonderful a novel as its title promises. It traces the history Trueba family in Chile over four generations. The truly spritual person of the title is Clara del Valle Trueba of the second generation. It is she and her husband, Esteban Trueba, who build the big house on the corner, the house of the spirits, in Santiago, Chile, the capital. Clara is a clairvoyant and not only has quite a sense of the future, but also can actually make objects move with her spiritual gifts. She, in particular, has a three-legged stool that helps her come in touch with the spiritual word. In spite of the beauty of Clara's prophetic powers, Isabel Allende's novel is quite hard-hitting with the harshness and cruelty of Esteban Trueba's anger and the realism of the political events in Chile, particularly the establishment of dictatorial rule in the year 1973. Esteban's toughness results in him surviving into these times. He and his granddaughter, Alba, a philosophy student at the University of Santiago who is tortured by the military regime in the year 1973, narrate the story of the novel "la casa de los espíritus" from their own experiences, but also largely from the notebooks that Clara, Esteban's wife and Alba's grandmother, kept all her life to bear witness to the happenings around her. Isabel Allende's novel "la casa de los espíritus" is one of the best books that I have ever experienced. I read it in the original Spanish with the Magda Bogin English translation beside me. It was a delight to read Isabel Allende's novel in Spanish.

Amo amo amo!
