You never know where the ingredients are imported from, and considering Nature's Bounty's history, you never know what might be in its products.    My family and I experienced severe health problems from taking Nature's Bounty's Vitamin D tablets some years ago, which I am sure contained something very toxic, and should not have been on the market.  We still have health issues related to the Vitamin D, and I have been unable to find out what the substance was that caused us so many problems.  My phone calls to Nature's Bounty were disconnected twice.

Nature's Bounty (formerly knows as NBTY, Inc.) has had many reported violations of FDA, FTC., U.S. Postal Service, and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration regulations including violations of FDA good manufacturing practices, adulterated and illegally marketed products, misbranded products,  unsubstantiated therapeutic claims, misrepresentation, deceptive and false or misleading claims, and numerous illegal shipments of large quantities of pseudoephedrine tablets used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Nature's Bounty's illegally marketed L-Tryptophan was associated with an outbreak of Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome (EMS) in 1989 which sickened at least 1,500 people - at least 38 fatally. Nature's Bounty's officers at the time of the EMS outbreak included Arthur Rudolph, Scott Rudolph, and Harvey Kamil.

Even though people were dying from effects of ephedra products, Nature's Bounty's officers, especially Harvey Kamil, were adamantly opposed to its ban.  The FDA eventually banned ephedra after thousands of reported poisonings.

The former New York Attorney General also found that herbal products manufactured by Nature's Bounty (Walmart and Walgreen brands) contained little or none of the product listed on the label, but did contain unlisted ingredients.

Other issues involved class action suits associated with securities violations (including fraud) involving several of Nature's Bounty's former or current officers, Arthur Rudolph, Scott Rudolph, and Harvey Kamil.

There are thousands of adverse events associated with Nature's Bounty's and/or its brands/subsidiaries' products listed in the report FDA and Dietary Supplements: By the Numbers.  (Products associated with the address 110 Orville Drive, Bohemia, NY)  Here are only a few examples: hepatitis, pancreatitis, convulsion, metal poisoning, blood arsenic increased, exposure to toxic agent.  Nature's Bounty also reportedly provided products to other companies as a third party manufacturer, therefore, there could be thousands more adverse events associated with Nature's Bounty's manufacturing process.

Some consumers might not be aware that the FDA does not review or approve dietary supplements before they reach the market.   The U.S. Government Accountability Office has referred many issues to the FDA regarding contaminated supplements, and spurious claims make by supplement manufacturers.  The American Medical Association has continued to urge congress to modify regulations and require that dietary supplements and herbal products undergo FDA approval for safety and efficacy.   The supplement Industry, especially Nature's Bounty, which has referenced the favorable regulatory environment as a positive influence on its growth, has opposed greater oversight by the FDA.

Is it normal for them to smell awful?

I can’t answer correctly, because it is relative.  I don’t find that the odor is awful, because all suplements have a weird odor... so I don’t think that this is bad.

How does it work ?

Vitamin D is necessary to work with calcium for bone health. The sun also supplies  Vitamin D but many of us do not get enough sun to provide an adequate amount.
