oh so glorious
I got this lens two days ago and I’m honestly having such a great time with it. As a 40mm lens, the color rendering is just okay compared to my other primes like the Viltrox 56mm f1.7, but as a macro lens it’s absolutely amazing. Manual focus isn’t too hard as long as you have enough light and focus peaking turned on. The 1:1 minimum focusing distance is around 16 cm which is more than enough for most things I want to shoot. I do wish it had a cold shoe mount for adding a light but that’s not a big deal. The build quality is unreal. It feels like a tank. Everything is metal, it’s nicely heavy in the hand but never too much. I love the feel of this lens so much. The only thing I don’t like is the lens cap but that seems to be a TTArtisan habit. The good part is it never falls off in your bag. Also metal. I saw some reviews mentioning flare but it hasn’t happened to me at all. Maybe it will someday, I’m not sure. I just started doing macro photography and I’m a total amateur so maybe I wouldn’t even notice, but so far no issues at all. I want to give a shoutout to the TTArtisan team for their customer service. I bought this lens literally a day and a half before the Black Friday sale. I reached out asking if I could still get the holiday discount and they replied in about ten minutes offering the discounted price since my purchase was so close. That was amazing, thank you. About the price compared to alternatives. I basically paid 91 dollars for this lens during Black Friday. A set of JJC extension tubes for Fuji X is already 40 dollars, and a Raynox DCR-250 costs more than 70 dollars. It’s pretty obvious how much of a bargain this lens is. I actually bought the tubes first but struggled to get enough light. I also tried the Raynox but didn’t like losing infinity focus. Once I got this lens there was no going back. I had a little FOMO over not getting the 100mm f2.8 2x macro. The 2x magnification is cool but that lens is three times the price and twice the weight, so I had to let go of my love for long focal lengths and compression. Overall this lens has amazing build quality, feels great in the hand, is not too heavy, has incredible value, is super fun to use, and gives really nice macro results. Just get it. I’m attaching some sample photos taken with this lens. I’m a beginner and it shows but hopefully you can still see how easy and satisfying the results are from a newbie’s point of view. I shot these handheld using a Godox IT30 Pro with its diffuser. Any diffuser should work. Flash is important in macro because the depth of field is so thin that even tiny movements cause blur, and flash helps freeze the subject. If you use a Fujifilm X-T5 like me, here are a few notes. The fastest shutter that syncs with flash is 1/250 (250x) so I set that. I use aperture around f/8 to f/11 for more depth of field. With those settings the EVF becomes very dark, so turn off the exposure preview: Setup → Screen Settings → Preview EXP/WB in Manual Mode set to OFF. Don’t forget that flash only works with mechanical shutter, not electronic. After that it’s just adjusting ISO and flash power. I usually set flash to manual at 1/32 and ISO around 400. If the shot is too dark, increase flash to 1/16 or 1/8. If it’s still dark at full power, increase ISO. Very beginner-level method but the results still make me happy. In conclusion this is an excellent lens with fantastic build and quality. It’s easy to use and the results look great to me. Thank you TTArtisan. PS: I got my hands on the 100mm 2x macro one today. I found it too heavy and unwieldy. After using it for a while my hands became so exhausted. I figure that lens is more for tripod use than handheld. But like this one I find its macro quality is amazing too. I'm glad I keep this lens, 2x is great but 1x and this compact form is better for my case.

Fantastic beginner macro lens
The Ttartisans 40mm is a great Macro lens for anyone wishing to dip their toes into the Hobby. Build: The Lens features an all metal construction and actually has some heft to it. The focus ring has a stiff but very smooth turn with a long focus throw. The Aperture ring feels extremely nice and has clicks every half stop going from F2.8 to F16. When focusing down to closer objects the front does protrude quite far as this lens does have external focusing. Image Quality: Image quality is solid for the price, with excellent sharpness even at f2.8. The one caveat I found is that the lens can exhibit internal reflections when strong light enters from certain oncoming angles, this usually shows up as a washed out orange ring on the outer-portion of the image. The bokeh of this lens is also very smooth and specular highlights always appear nice and round due to the diaphragm design. macro capability: The lens is capable of 1:1 reproduction meaning when the lens is at its minimum focusing distance, subjects are represented at their true size onto the image sensor. Overall: This is a solid macro lens capable of good image quality with true macro capability.

Value for money
Bought one for my MFT cameras. Pretty useful, image is clear. Best with IBIS, as the manual focusing can be a bit tricky. Otherwise, good value for money.

Digitizing 35mm Slides Is A Breeze
I bought this specifically to digitize 35mm Kodachrome slides. I can't be happier with the results! I paired it with the JJC Converter (also bought here on Amazon) and didn't need to use any extension tubes. While it is manual focus, it makes copying them so much faster and cleaner than using a dedicated scanner. I have a few thousand to copy. If my opinion changes, I will update here.

With this tiny and versatile lens, I was able to shoot a commercial for a product video with cinema quality. I highly recommend it, you won't regret. I'm attaching a video test I using this lens with a Panasonic Lumix S5 mark I. The results are quite impressive!
