Great evaporative cooler!
We recently moved into a house in the mountains of Colorado, and most homes up here do not have a/c, including our house. With the windows closed all day while at work, the temp was getting up to 75-77 during the later afternoon hours (outside temps have been about 80, but lots of direct sunlight on the front of the house and coming in through the upper windows). When we get home, we open the windows and have the unit a foot or so in front of one. Even with only filling the unit with cold well water, it works great. Haven't needed to try the freezer packs. Cools the living room/dining room/kitchen area down to 68 or so within 30-45 min. The oscillating function really helps to make it feel cooler in the area 10-15 feet out from the unit. On it's highest setting, it has about the same noise level as a regular box fan on high. After two weeks of use, I took the back cover off to clean down inside the tank (pretty easy to do with only four screws to remove). Even with us using well water in it, there was only a very light film to clean in the bottom of the tank. Super easy to roll the unit into the kitchen to fill from the sink sprayer. I would definitely recommend this unit. So far, it's been worth every penny.

Definitely works !
Firstly, this cooler is not a refrigerated unit with a compressor so it cannot be expected to perform the same as a typical residential AC unit. With water added and on "cool" setting, this cooler works great, especially if you are in a direct path of the cool breeze. I am using it in an insulated 3 car garage for several hours at a time, when outside temp 90F or greater. I am pleased with the performance. I am definitely staying cool while working at a bench. Other advantages: 1. low energy cost vs actual AC unit 2. can use the included refrigerated cooling packs to improve cooling 3. easy to maneuver/portable. 4. A power cord wrap is appreciated on the back. Other: 1. cooling effect not as great if you are outside the direct line of airflow. 2. Use of water will raise the humidity of the space cooled. 3. On high fan speed, noise may make it difficult for an on-line video meeting (not deal breaker imo) Final: recommend if it's not practical to create an exhaust vent opening for a traditional AC unit or if you want to avoid energy costs of a typical AC unit.

Works really well until the water warms up (a suggestion for optimizing cold)...
What these swamp coolers really need is a function that keeps the water cool because as soon as the water warms up, this becomes pretty useless. It works fantastic when the water is cold, but you'll likely run into the same problem I was in warm weather where the water gets too warm over time, even with the ice packs, and it begins to not work as well for cooling. What I suggest is this: if you will be using it for a long time like all day, don't fill the tank all the way. Fill it half-way and then fill it again later on with cold water and a new cold ice pack. That way, you aren't working with warm water the second half of the day. That issue aside, this does work very well with cold water. It almost feels air-conditioner-cold at first. It has a powerful air flow, too. I do like it a lot, I just wish it had a feature that keeps water cool! EDIT: A few days later, and both my ice packs split in the freezer, just like everyone else's. Sort of ridiculous that they include such horrible ice packs with this machine. I ordered six of these ice packs in Mini size (three of them fit in the top reservoir perfectly so I got three extras to keep cool while the first three are in use so I can rotate them): Igloo Performance Ice Blocks - Mini . They last much longer than the ice packs that came with this machine! I highly recommend that you get them, too.

Odd fish-like odor coming from unit
Follow Up: I originally left a 2-star review and was contacted by the company offering a few solutions. Unfortunately, their recommendations did not fix the odor I was experiencing. I was then offered a refund or a replacement unit free of charge. I opted to receive a new unit and I am happy to report that this one does not have any odd odor and works very well. Therefore I am changing my rating from 2-stars to 5-stars. Original Review: This unit cools very well. I first placed it on my deck where it was around 85-degrees F outside, loaded the top filler portion with ice and water and turned on the cooling mode. I was getting about 70-degrees F out of it which was quite impressive. I then moved the unit inside where it was 76-degrees F and let it run and was getting 66-degrees F output which was great ... at first. Then my wife came into the room I had the unit in and said "Whats that smell? Smells fishy, like the back bay." The longer it ran the more I picked up on the smell too. I placed the unit back on the deck again and let it run for several hours thinking (hoping) the smell would go away. Unfortunately, that did not help. I turned the cooling function off and let the fan run for an hour, drying out the pad. I then smelled the pad and that is definitely where the smell is coming from. I am not sure if a new pad will resolve this but the last thing I want to do with a brand new unit is take it apart and "fix" it. Unsure at this point if I will keep it or return it.

Nothing more than an expensive fan.
I have to say that I am really disappointed in this product. According to most of the reviews I read, all were positive and mentioned how the evaporator cooler was cooling for them. I bought this product to replace a box fan I had in my garage for my two dogs that can come and go through a pet door. Summer is here and the garage is hot now and the fan wasn’t cutting it. So I ordered the evaporator cooler in hopes it would make the garage a little more cooler for my dogs, but it did not happen. The box fan that I replaced (which is going back in the garage ) blew more air and the air actually felt cooler. The ice blocks made no difference as well as I can judge. The product is well made, but doesn’t live up to the hype in my opinion. To me it is just a high priced fan and very disappointing performance. I will probably buy a small ac unit for the garage. If anything changes I will do an update, but it doesn’t look promising.

When I first got the AC I was shocked as to how big it was as I was expecting something the size of a garbage can. After un packing it and setting it up (which didn't take long at all) I turned on the unit and was met with the coldest breeze I had felt all summer, I was very happy with it and then my landlord/friend pushed a button and the AC kicked in and the air got cold real quick. I have been using the AC in my room when I sleep and in my game room when I play VR or just want to play a game or enjoy a movie. This is the BEST thing I have ever gotten and in this heat right now with temperatures here in Alberta Canada almost in the mid 30s early 40s range...this is a godsend of a device. I Do not regret purchasing and if I had more cash I would have bought a second one. Easy to use and the big fan blows nice cold air outwards and the the huge reservoir tank keeps things cool for a good 5 hours or more. Be aware this unit is not to be used in huge rooms as its not quite that strong to cool that room quickly, this unit is best used in a small room or bedroom or even a medium sized theater or game room. Works best with ice packs and cold water from a bathtub run into a small sized pail or ice cream bucket. Not certain how it would work outdoors at is does come with a garden hose attachment. Energy wise I will find out if this unit uses up a lot of electricity or not when the bill comes in that is one thing more people never talk about when doing a review. Still a fantastic Portable AC that for the price asking is a good investment on a truly hot summer.

I live in a warm Condo and this is perfect and works excellent. It cools my place and works so good. Once you fill it up with water and DON’T EVER OVER FLOW the water or it will spill through the sides. Use it as a cool fan but when you want it ice cold put a freezer pack in the top and WOW does it get colder and right away. I love this unit and near a window or not it works fantastic. Thank you for making such a great unit. Ron from Canada.

Excelente producto, sirve de maravilla para un espacio de 30 m2. Evidentemente es para lugares áridos, no sirve en climas humedos. Hay que tener también circulación de aire, muy importante.

Works great! If you are buying this and you live in humid environment you aren't doing it right. These things only workwell in low humidity areas. If you have an ice maker dumping a load into the top is a great replacement to using the included ice packs. Only complaint is that even on the lowest fan setting the unit is louder than I would prefer (about the same as a standard fan on high)
